M3-2013春: doubleeleven UpperCut/undercurrent 『DEUCHOLIC』

With about three weeks to go until M3-31春, the winter drought is almost behind us! In a surprisingly importer-friendly move, eroge OP masters doubleeleven UpperCut provided information about their upcoming CD sometime back in February 2013. Their official website also got a brand new look and now features a complete discography section. The big news they were teasing is actually twofold.

First they will release a best-of CD 『DEUCHOLIC』 on April 29th 2013, featuring 22 tracks from both doubleeleven undercurrent and UpperCut. This is a great occasion for new fans to jump in with the best they've got. But for those of us who already own all deUC albums, this is still a good deal in case you're not familiar with their other unit "deuc" (no caps!). I'm pleased to report that 「Love Survival ~愛の軍事演習~」 will be included, this may just be my favourite song from them. Comparing their oldest and newest stuff is interesting, they evolved quite a bit in just 4 years.

The other news means a little more to their Japanese fans, but we're going to report it anyway! doubleeleven (both UpperCut and undercurrent) will be performing full sets at their first one-man live concert on May 18th 2013. Guests include the lovely 藤原鞠菜, d@isy tune and 西沢はぐみ. Sounds like a hell of a party... the rest of us will have to imagine being there, but that's 100% denpa-style! Actually, I'll try to make it up to worldwide deUC fans soon... stay tuned!

Online MOSAIC.WAV concert 「AKIBA-POP√NICOLLECTION」 happening this weekend

Sham Studio wrote in to remind international MOSAIC.WAV fans that the "2012 LIVE「AKIBA-POP√NICOLLECTION」 in ニコファーレ" event is about to take place on Saturday, February 25th 2012. There are actually two sequential concerts, one at 1PM and the other at 6PM. Use this handy website to convert Japan time to your own timezone (late Friday night for most North Americans).

If the timetable isn't a problem and you're aching to see a live MOSAIC.WAV performance in the comfort of your home, you'll need to shell out 1500 nico points, which works out to ¥1500. That's pretty damn cheap considering real tickets are around ¥6000. It's actually easy to buy these points online as long as you have a Visa card. Just follow this simple tutorial and you'll be set. Having a good internet connection also helps.

Actually, if you're not up for a late-night MOSAIC.WAV concert, you can also opt to go with a "time shift" (that yellow button with a clock) which lets you purchase a postponed event viewing. The only "disadvantage" is you won't get to post regular or サイリウム comments. We're not really sure how many times you can rewatch the video, if at all. This timeshift option also expires on March 10th. Mandi would like to remind first-time point buyers outside of Japan that it's possible your company will block the purchase, under the suspicion of overseas fraud. Just call them up if that happens.

According to the website, ave;new are set to open the show. We'd assume that's also included a part of the virtual ticket, so quite a nice bonus! Of course, nicofarre being a proper concert hall, those who get to be there in person will not only get to experience the joys of a real live concert, they'll also be able to get their hands on all kinds of spectacular goods. Probably the top must-get item will be this 「neko にゃんこ POP!」 CD which is sure to become quite rare.

Speaking of にゃんこ-POP, here's a recent MOSAIC.WAV song to get you pumped up for this weekend's live event! 「とどけ!イン・にゃあ・はーと」 was on their latest album 「AKIBA-POP√RECOLLECTION」 which we unboxed with great pleasure back in December 2011.

Details on 5th MOSAIC.WAV album「吟遊Planet☆AKIBA-POP」

[Update March 2nd 2011] The store is now open for international orders! Get your "Extravagantly Extra-Equipped" Edition NOW!

[original story] Since there has been so much activity from smaller and newer players in the World of Denpa, we haven't been covering MOSAIC.WAV as much for the past couple months. Don't get us wrong: King Kayamori and Queen mi~ko still reign over the Kingdom of Akiba-Pop and we are still their loyal, ever-loving subjects. Very soon, March 9th 2011 to be precise, they will release their long-promoted fifth album 「吟遊Planet☆AKIBA-POP」(Ginyu Planet☆AKIBA-POP), which we first heard about nearly a year ago. There were some delays and a couple pretty cool singles in between, but this time it's for real. Here's the tracklist:
  1. Thing! Think! Ting! (new)
  10. Next Stage! ⇒ "Hyperluminal" (new)
  11. パペピプPOLIDAY (new)
  12. 天体上∇吟遊サテライト (new)
  13. FLY-ALONE (mp3) (nicovideo)

There are a number of interesting facts to note from this tracklist alone. First, you'll notice there are SEVEN new songs on this new album, which is far more generous than the 2-3 new tracks we usually get on a new album. On the other hand, they haven't composed that many eroge songs since 2009's 「Superluminal Ж AKIBA-POP」, so they did need to create more new songs to pad out this record. Second, you'll also notice that none of the new songs have samples, clearly they want to keep them as surprises (good on them).

Their selection of "old" songs is really interesting. First of all, #4 「おいしい魔法のサシスセソ」 finally gets a full-length release, four years after its initial release in early 2007. Written by big-bro 小池雅也, this is a ridiculously hyper-active song that brings back the feeling of their first three albums. In fact it might even sound out of place on here (especially for new fans), but you certainly won't hear me complain. #5 is the absolutely brutal 「NAOKO-THUNDER VERNIER II」 which mi~ko told me was a bit of a Gradius homage. I uploaded an English translation video back in December 2008, but unfortunately Youtube pulled the plug on the denpanosekai account last year and I don't have a backup of that video... such a shame.

#6 is the downright hilarious "semen-security" song. That youtube video is censored but still NSFW... and totally worth seeing! As for the song itself, you can find complete impressions on November 2008 report. Yet another tune that totally deserved a full version. #7 and #8 are the OP and ED theme songs to 2008's Musumaker, which we also extensively covered when the single was released at C74. Both tracks are a bit on the soft side but since the single is all but out of press, fans will appreciate the opportunity to revisit these songs.

The last of the "old" songs is just six months old. 「脳・内・再・醒~ecphoric dance~」 came out in September 2010, on a single which included two more songs that likely won't be featured anywhere else. Speaking of which, there's at least one game song which still hasn't been featured on an album. We're talking about 「オコサマオトナナオサナナナ」 which came out in November 2008, almost at the same time as that "semen-security" song. It was an interesting song that featured mi~ko doing three different voices, but somehow it didn't make the cut. Too bad!

So now you're completely sold, hyped, hooked and you can't wait to drop some mad cash to acquire this piece of denpa history, right? You're in luck, CDJapan has both the regular (34$) and limited (40$) editions for sale. Better act fast on that limited edition however, it's sure to sell out in no time. What's included in the limited edition? Aside from the long case and different artwork (both on disc and cover), there's also a packed-in light novel, titled 「吟遊サテライト」. But wait, there's more!

REAL fans will want to order the ultra-limited "gorgeous edition" set which includes:

Wow... a MOSAIC.WAV LP record! How about that! That booklet is equally interesting, as it is said to contain interviews, photography and unique illustrations. The data disc has ultra-high quality versions of all new tracks, while the vinyl holds all six "old" songs. Extremely interesting... but can you afford the 6,800円 asking price? If so, head on over to the official MOSAIC.WAV eSTORE and order away. Since they don't ship outside Japan, just use dv8cag.com and tell them denpanosekai.com sent you!

As a final bit of related information, the second MOSAIC.WAV live tour will hit Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo in April 2011. Head over to the official site for ticket information!

C79: IOSYS and TANO*C set to battle on disc, paper and stage

IOSYS vs HARDCORE TANO*C... FIGHT!!!
Something gigantic this way comes! On December 29th 2010, IOSYS and HARDCORE TANO*C will be locked in the ultimate DJ battle of the year. There has been a growing number of  intra-circle collaborations in the underground doujin scene for the past couple years, but this one takes the crown. A grand total of 26 artists will be collaborating: mangaka, illustrators, DJs, VJs, singers, graphics designers and so on. This isn't just a CD, just a manga book or just a split live set... it's all THREE at once! Let's start with the music.
  1. kz vs RoughSketch vs A~YA / Let Your Decks Be Played
  2. ono☆ken vs DJ ARM / THE BIG BERG
  3. REDALiCE vs Thanatos vs DJ 豚鼻博士 vs t+pazolite vs 野宮あゆみ / believe my soul
  4. t+pazolite vs DJ ARM / Rise Up 2 the Higher
  5. Thanatos vs DJ 豚鼻博士 / Ascension
  6. P*Light vs D.watt vs Nana Takahashi / A Night Before Revolution
  7. DJ 豚鼻博士 vs DJ 一戸建 / SUPER KIMOI
  8. RoughSketch vs Morrigan / DISTORTED WAVES
  9. DJ ARM vs DJ TECHNORCH / Beat to the Catastrophe
  10. REDALiCE vs DJ ARM vs 三澤秋 / Monomachia
All involved DJs will participate in one way or another to the 10 tracks present on disc. Four of them (presumably 1, 3, 6, 10) will also feature vocals. As you can see, DJ ARM is present on 40% of the tracks, so this disc is very relevant to 電波の世界 readers. You shouldn't have to ask "why", but the official MegaPeer website describes him as an "incredibly proficient denpa song creator" so there you go. Of course, REDALiCE is the second biggest attraction on this list (or first depending on your background) and then the other DJs are far, faaaar from being nobodies. There is no crossfade sampler to this day, but the soundtrack is  described as "club music" and songs are said to match the manga characters' personality.

Speaking of which, the CD will come enclosed in a massive B5-sized 150-pages manga book, with full color cover + flaps. The book will also feature cameos from such DJs as USAO, DJ Noriken, DJ-Technetium and crazy motherfucker kenta-v.ez., among others. Interestingly enough, IOSYS seem to portray the "good guys" (light blue) while HARDCORE TANO*C are clearly going to be the "bad guys" (aggressive red), especially when you look at the masked REDALiCE and t+pazolite as an evil clown. No matter who wins it in the end, this is sure to be one hell of a hot-blooded tale!

Finally, those of us lucky enough to be in Tokyo on January 8th 2010 can attend a MEGAPEER live event featuring all of the involved musicians. Namely, DJs from ALiCE'S EMOTiON, IOSYS, WAVE, onoken, Alstroemeria Records and many more circles will be tearing shit up all day long. This is most likely where the VJs will get their time to shine as well. There is actually very little info about this concert other than it starts at 2PM and tickets are available now through Lawson (code 70888). All of the latest details can be found at megapeer.net. See ya there!!!

Japan Firsthand: Ryohoji & Toromi Part 2 - Interviews

Here's the second and final part of our "Ryohoji & Toromi" article. Make sure to check out Part 1 if you haven't already seen it, lots of pictures! This time, we have an exclusive interview with Toromi herself, along with a surprise video message! Ryohoji head priest NAKAZATO Nichikou is also present after the jump, so make sure to read on!

Interview With Toromi

Toromi: I'm here in Nishi-Hachiouji, together with Mandi! Yoroshiku onegaisimasu-. Toro written in hiragana, Mi written "beauty", makes Toromi!

DnS: Up until now you've worked on singing, manga, cosplay, as a seiyuu, and many other things. Are there any new challenges you'd like to try?"

Toromi: Ehh--?! Something I haven't tried yet... Ummmm... Well.... I wonder... I can't think of anything off the top of my head.

DnS: Sorry, it's hard to think about it on the spot, isn't it!

Toromi: Saying I want to go to America would be the obvious thing to say, wouldn't it? Something more original would be more interesting... Well, I guess I'd like to go to America and do a live concert~!

Japan Firsthand: Ryohoji & Toromi Part 1 - Photo Journal

Hey DnS readers, Mandi here. As you may or may not know, I've been working "behind the scenes" here for a while, but this is my first article in what will hopefully be a series of firsthand reports and interviews from Japan [ed: many more coming!]. This time my travels brought me to the much talked about "Moe Temple" Ryohoji (了法寺). As reported here before, the cute and creative multi-talented Toromi (とろ美) is the one who adds the moe element in her music, art, and performances. Keep reading for a photo journal of my trip, and in my next article I'll post my first hand interview with Toromi herself, including video!

東方紅楼夢6 round-up: new 天然ジェミニ and IOSYS albums

Today (October 11 2010) is 体育の日 (Health and Sports Day), a national holiday in Japan. But diehard Touhou fans won't let a little forced exercise get in the way of their quest to acquire more items for their never-ending collection. For its sixth edition, the Osaka Touhou Festival 東方紅楼夢 is hosting hundreds of doujin artists, many of which will be launching their latest work for the occasion.

Of particular interest to 電波~萌え fans, the recent duo (trio now?) 天然ジェミニ will be releasing their second album 「東方女乱演舞」! If you are not familiar with 愛原佑季 and 愛原千尋 (and big-sister あんな?), please read this previous article. It almost looks as though this is a direct sequel to their C77 album 「東方香辛甘味」, right down to the composers: さつきがてんこもり, 未来派 and 24 bit lolitas all make greatly appreciated returns. Some of the texts were written by master lyricist ユウノウミ, with whom the duo collaborated on multiple occasions in the past. You can check out the demo MP3, but no PV so far.

To be perfectly honest, we haven't really covered IOSYS albums in the past because it feels like they can't bring themselves to focus on quality over quantity. They have great songs, but they're diamonds covered with so much sand. With all due respect to the composers involved, it seems that the chances of one of their albums being memorable is directly proportional to the ratio of songs that feature ARM/void in some capacity. Hate to pick favourite sons, but it is what it is (and feel free to disagree).

That said, while this album features at least five ARM-related tracks out of 12 (medley included), the previews for 「東方浮思戯革命」 seem to indicate that this is a well-balanced album. But just as interesting is the inclusion of three tracks from uno... a.k.a RoughSketch. The young Hokkaido-based DJ has collaborated with IOSYS in the past, notably writing lyrics for "Border of Extacy". But with these three new arranges and a whole remix album in 「東方IO-BEST BEATS」, you might as well think he's a full-time member.

The new album does include a couple of denpa songs, as well as splendid vocal talents from MIKO, the monotone girls and... ゆっくり (The Best Vocaloid Ever). Actually it's just some Windows App called SofTalk, but it sure suits the take'r easy attitude. All this to say that track #9 「 信仰を 集めて生やし うしろあし」 probably takes the cake in terms of wackiest song of the album, and niconico bullet-hell commenters seem to agree.

Like IOSYS, Forest Pireo could use a little more focus when it comes to putting together compilations. Their latest album 「Memory Melodies」 has a couple of fantastic moe~denpa tunes that are unfortunately drowned out by the other tracks. Three of the ten songs feature ななひら and/or kana on vocals, which also means spirited and energetic music to back them up. Unfortunately the rest of the album sounds glum and dreary, which works against the small dose of energy mustered up on tracks 5, 6, 7. Still, for the ななひら completist in all of us, this one can't be skipped!

And now for some bite-sized news regarding today's event:

C.H.S 「蟲と東方と純血(ストロベリー)ジャム」

t+pazolite is back for more madness! Well, it's not like he ever stopped. This funky trip down strawberry lane redefines T.U.I (Touhou Under Influence). I gotta say though, his "Shitty Night" song is totally fucking gross.

ゆきまめ + more 「Digitalic -L+R- Party "Preview ver."」
ゆきまめ is a favourite here at 電波の世界, but it's an absolute shame that she hasn't had her own album yet. Hopefully she'll take a cue from her friend ななひら and this summer's splendid 「ゴキゲン77゚↑」, but until then we'll gladly accept whichever small-time compilation on which she chooses to grace her presence.

k6project 「Thank you "Lotus land"」
Last but certainly not least, we have the mammoth "Thank you Lotus land" compilation from k6project, which packs 46 tunes, 21 manga and 265 illustrations onto a DVD. While you can't sample any of this beast online (it's only 100円 but good luck getting a copy), what's interesting to know is that one of our dear readers, namely cYsmix from Norway, is making his international debut on this compilation. While he is mostly known for his Touhou remixes on Youtube, the guy is also a bit of a denpa fan. To wit, this splendid 狂乱家族日記 ED remix with a hardcore spin.

MOSAIC.WAV's seventh single 「脳・内・再・醒~ecphoric dance~」 out today

MOSAIC.WAV's seventh single is out in stores today. Don't confuse this new release with the "touch panel" single, that one was exclusively released for Comiket 78. Instead, 「脳・内・再・醒~ecphoric dance~」 is connected to MOSAIC.WAV's upcoming full-length album, set for release later this year. You can click the banner to check out a sample, but you could also just download it. Doesn't this sound a little different? That's because the title track is a collaboration effort with cosMo, whom they shared the stage with back in February 2010. The tracklist is as follows:
  1. 脳・内・再・醒~ecphoric dance~
  2. Singing & Ringing
  3. Vela
  4. 脳・内・再・醒~ecphoric dance~(Off Vocal)
  5. Singing & Ringing(Off Vocal)
  6. Vela(Off Vocal)
If you're in Japan over the next four weeks, you have four different occasions to see MOSAIC.WAV live. Check the full list here, but if you're looking to get the most bang for your buck, then 萌えフェス it is. This day-long event not only features MOSAIC.WAV and 桃井はるこ as top-billing, it also has over 20 entertainers from the moe-biz. But if you're the jealous/over-protective kind of guy, you may want to steer clear of DJサオリリス. She will fuck your girlfriend.

C78: Break out the shopping list, Doujincore open for business!

Comiket 78 is exactly one weekend away, have you decided which artists will get your hard-earned money? If not, better get on it quick since Doujincore are running their usual doujin group import operation as we speak. The order form was made public today and you have until June 13th to send in your list/money. This DIY business is run by some good Canadian kids, so they get Don Cherry's stamp of approval as well as mine. By the way, the "denpa watchlist" on your right was recently updated with the denpa-related C78 offerings, but it is by no means complete (let us know what we're forgetting!!!).

While their shipping/commission fees may seem a little high at first sight, don't forget this may be your only chance to score some C78-exclusive items... not to mention you won't have to stand in line for hours on end. For the record, I am considering the following items: MOSAIC.WAV 「全世界的タッチパネル」, t+pazolite feat. リズナ 「Honey I Scream!」, おでんぱ☆スタジオ 「おでんぱ☆夏祭り」, ななひら 「ゴキゲン77゚↑」, ALBATROSICKS 「PARAMOUNT FEVER !!!!!!!!!!11111」 and possibly their new manga book.

Oh right, you're supposed to stick to CDs with doujincore, but if you really want something else and are ready to pay extra for over-sized shipping, then try and get in touch with them. That said, there is an other option which I've just recently uncovered: Japan Shopping Assistance Service are also going to C78. Their prices are about the same as doujincore's but they don't have an item limit or type restriction. However, I have NOT USED THEM in the past, so in no way is this website endorsing JSAS. You're on your own, but feel free to share your experience if you do end up using them.

UPDATE: doujincore will only buy from the "east"/doujin wing, so forget about that MOSAIC.WAV single or the new とろ美/あゆ/ARM mini-album (OMFG). However I have contacted with JSAS and may end up giving them a try just for these two items.

Relax, take it easy with MOSAIC.WAV's fourth うじゅ single

Since 2007, MOSAIC.WAV have been composing theme songs for TOEI's Eiga Mura mascot うじゅ on a yearly basis. While the first three releases had absolutely batshit insane A-sides and equally mindblowing B-sides (as well as the occasional bonus track), the fourth single (as-of-yet untitled) puts craziness on the backburner.... at least for their first public promo.

This new song is actually a remix of 「うじゅたま☆うじゅりんぱ」, the very first うじゅ theme which first came out in June 2007 (lyrics sheet). However this is the "Kyoto Dialect" which, for all intents and purposes, probably only makes sense if you're a native speaker or a diehard linguist. You'll also rapidly notice that the music itself is quite different from regular MOSAIC.WAV songs, sounding more like traditional Japanese music than high-octane denpa.

Regardless, it's a refreshing new take on a now-classic composition and chances are the B-Side will feature the MOSAIC.WAV we know and love. Oh by the way, this new song was originally composed by none other than Big Brother 小池雅也, but Team LoveBullets head honcho 磯村カイ handled the remix! This is his third collaboration; he first arranged 「一件落着よベイベー!」 on 2007's 「Future-Fiction: AKIBA-POP!!」 and then composed 「最高ψ最強φメロダロイド!」 on 2008's superb 「ラストバトル! アキバトラー“μ”」 single. Speaking of which, Akibattler is definitely due for a comeback!!

In related news, MOSAIC.WAV have been interviewed by the "Uju Production Committee". As usual, み~こ keeps chatter to a minimum while かやぴ has a lot to say. They touch on the upcoming うじゅ single, the new song itself as well as provide more details on Kyoto Dialect usage. Finally, they talk about their upcoming Uzumaki concert on September 25 2010, with Kayamori-san calling this live clubhouse "cozy". Another good description would be "fucking awesome", judging by these fantastic pictures.

Get your Doujin Fix from Doujincore

Flashback to January 2010, I was bitching about a number of things. I made SHORT CIRCUIT III happen by sheer willpower, so now I'm working on getting a mi~ko X miko showdown by the end of the year. However, point #3 is still a major pain in the neck... Regular courier services suck, they're needlessly complex, cost an arm and a leg and take forever to deliver your goods. Amazon.co.jp are big-time pussies and won't ship 99.9% of the good stuff outside of Japan. DLSite have opened up to the world but honestly I'm not a big fan of paying for MP3s...

Here's a workaround: enter Doujincore and their sporadic "Group Import/The Profit" service. I have no stake in this enterprise, nor am I getting some sort of preferential treatment for promoting their service. I'm just being 100% honest with you readers, since I know you're dying to get your hands on rare denpa/doujin stuff: this shit works. It's fast and the commission fee is just. This will be my third time ordering stuff through them and hopefully they can keep this long enough to get us through the year. Heck I wouldn't mind being one of their C79 errand boys if needs be.

There's just one catch: the current deadline is June 18th 2010 at 1:00 AM (PST), so get cranking.

MOSAIC.WAV fans get their own festival

MOSAIC.WAV fans in Japan have it all. Concerts, meet-and-greet sessions and limited edition albums, not to mention quick and easy access to their regular merchandise. Now they even have their own Fan Appreciation Festival! The first shindig will happen on June 13th 2010 at club月あかり夢てらす in Kawasaki, full details at the official webpage and mixi community.

So what should one expect at a fan festival? Basically it's one big party in a clubhouse setting, with 3 DJs spinning MOSAIC.WAV originals and their own remixed versions (that's the interesting part). There's also karaoke and a "call workshop". They encourage cosplay, so I hope to see many Tera-tans and Magical Hacker Riskus (wielding a massive trojan horse, of course). On the other hand, the selection is pretty limited for guys... oh man I'd totally cosplay as Koike-aniki wearing his Under17 outfit!!

See Toromi in crazy 1080p

Because anything less than 1080p would be unacceptable perfectly fine, but CYMEDIA1 insists on giving us high-definition とろ美 footage once again! Now we've all been hammer-blessed thanks to Abe and his crew.

This is Toromi's 「如来16」 off her C77 album 「たちつてとろ美ちゃん Ver1.7+」, but it ain't "just" another one of her wild songs. Hulkamandia-chan found out that its lyrics (and delivery, given this reading) is based on the 16th Chapter of the Lotus Sutra. I don't know about you guys, but I much prefer her version!

M3-2010春 電波ソング round-up (PART 2)

M3-2010春 has come and gone, leaving behind one of its most impressive sets of doujin/denpa offerings in recent memory. While the previous entry had a pretty complete round-up of the main releases, some interesting stuff escaped our vigilance and/or was completely unannounced. Yes, this post comes one week late... big whoop, wanna fight about it?

Good guy さつき が てんこもり (satsuki ga tenkomori) releases his own music through his studio皐 label but also takes care of side-project doujin circle ぐうのねサウンズ (GUUNONE sounds) which saw its third and four releases come out at M3.

「ミキューン!」 is a vocaloid compilation featuring satsuki and ラマーズP, a wildly popular Miku manipulator who got his very own full-length album on EXIT TUNES in 2009. All six songs are featured on this generous crossfade sampler, but you could also check out full versions of 「チョコレート」, 「ウインク・トランジ・スター」, 「STOMP THE ENEMY」 and probably the rest too if you look for them hard enough. All six tracks are extremely energetic and some of them were even tagged "denpa" by satsuki himself, so you know this is some good shit.

The second album is 「ACアダプターKICK-OFF!2」 which, as its title indicates, is the second entry in GUUNONE's "AC Adapter KICK-OFF!". Both this sequel and the original volume serve up wacky remixes of Nintendo classics such as Super Ghouls & Ghost, Mother 2 (Earthbound, motherfuckers!), Super Mario World and SimCity among others. Eight talented composers contributed a track, so this is a real treat for old-school gamers! Check out samplers for Volume 1 and Volume 2, but you should totally check out the full version of Satsuki's own track 「dead or die!」 which is a drum & bass remix of the first stage from one of the hardest games ever created!

There were a lot of great last-minute surprises at M3, but perhaps none greater than Birdtune's latest release: a new みりん☆ single CD!!! Don't let the fact that 「アタラセカイ」 was up against the clock fool you, its tracklist means serious business. We're talking brand new tracks from cosMo@暴走P, studio皐, 未来派 and a KuKuDoDo remix, not to mention moemoe art from あじさ 飴, the underground idol's usual illustrator. This is not only her most varied collection of music to date, it's also her best. Check out the sampler below, or download the MP3 directly.

33.turbo did have something for sale, but it wasn't her first single like previously presumed (it actually sold out on the only day it was available, that is to say M3-2009-fall). This time around, she had a brand new K-On! arrange mini-album for sale! Whether you're a fan of the series or not, you can't deny the sweet arrangements 33.turbo have to offer. Some chiptune, some drum&bass, all badass. The production team is listed here; looks like we're dealing with a brand new bunch of artists here! She apparently sold out this new mini-album within an hour... it was a steal at 300 yen to be sure. Hopefully this success is not short-lived and mimi-turbo can cook up a first album in time for Comiket 78!

You thought the glasses fetish was dead? Not so, says programYMG. The IOSYS/InnocentKey/SoundOnline supergroup has a brand new 9-track mini-album (5 of them are dramas). The actual songs themselves range from standard JPop to straight-up denpa, with a twisted gothic-themed one right in the middle. Too bad they don't go for the picopico stuff more often than they do, because that's probably where they shine the most.

ココ is an up-and-coming moe/denpa vocalist who's mostly known for her incredibly cute Innocent Key contributions, but true hardcore fans will remember her sweet collaborations with Satsuki the most. That Persona Arrangement Album was pretty sweet too! For M3, she was featured on Senses Circuit's 7th CD, cleverly titled 「ココミク☆ミラクル」, which features 5 original tracks from hitoshi. The above PV will give you a pretty good idea, but you can download a much longer crossfade sampler for your enjoyment. Doubt this will be as popular as MOSAIC.WAV's miku album... a shame, because it's definitely a high quality release that deserves everyone's attention!

Rapid-fire post-M3 news
  • Still no sampler from DystopiaGround's latest single, however you can check out some hilarious Engrish on nao's M3 booth. "This group of musicians is aiming at becoming the best A-POP artist in the universe"... or something like that? Wow, bold claim is bold!
  • Denpa idol maria-tan had her new single for sale... entitled 「バスルームは浮かれビート☆」. LOL is all that needs to be said.
  • Looks like Siestail delayed their Rizuna vocal album to C78.
  • Melo9 were at M3 but only had a two-track drama CD for sale, as well as their Valentine Day's single. Note that melo9 and おでんぱ☆スタジオ share some staff members!!! More on that later.
  • Twinkle Callion is another doujin circle that shares staff with melo9, one of the two singers this time. They're heavily on the moemoe tip, not so much denpa, but interesting stuff nonetheless. Their second single 「dream prayer box」 was up for grabs at M3.
  • As expected of とろ美, she had a new single just for M3. The second track 「キミに贈る言葉」 is new stuff, but the titular track 「センセイ布告」 can be downloaded from C:DRIVE as it's an ending theme for one of their recent eroge titles. Don't worry, she's more than likely to re-release this stuff at one of the coming comikets. The fantastic cover art though... that's bound to be a one-time deal only!

M3-2010春 電波ソング round-up

The spring edition of M3-2010 is just around the corner (May 5th), so here are some of the upcoming denpa-related albums worth checking out. Note that I've probably overlooked a bunch of them, so feel free to throw in your comments. As always, M3 runs a solid news page that gets pretty busy once the event approaches.

The first item on our shopping list is certainly the most curious one: it's a MOSAIC.WAV arrange album!!! At first I was like O(≧∇≦)O but then I was like ( ̄へ ̄). See, 「もざいくりこーだーvol.1」 features 8 MOSAIC.WAV songs played... on recorders. In fact, various flutes were used and they're all described in the opening minute of this sampler video. Do you like what you hear? I may end up buying this to support my fellow fans, but I'm just not that enticed by the results. But whether or not flute is your thing, you can't deny that the folks in the とらふえ circle are extremely talented, as this is actually their fourth album. Furthermore, the jacket artwork by Candy5 is pretty damn cool and this thing is just 600 yen!

Remember unMOMENT? Yeah, I miss them too. They had a ton of potential, but just drifted off into nothingness after the release of their one and only album 「萌魂 ~moe spirit~」 in 2006. オカザキシュン (OKAZAKI Shun) and 新堂真弓 (SHINDOU Mayumi) were backed on guitar by none other than 小池雅也 (KOIKE Masaya, aka big brother) and collaborated with MOSAIC.WAV among others. Both songstresses are still active but Okazaki is pretty much dedicated to BGM composition with 4-EVER. This brings us to Shindou and her brand new compilation album 「新堂真弓 AKIBA SOUND BEST」. While available for public consumption on May 21st, 100 copies will be sold at M3 (presumably a limited edition). The CD features a whopping 17 tracks, with her most popular song 「SHE SEE LOVE」 appropriately starting it all. Samples and commentary available on Candypop's website. Denpa fans: this is a must-buy!

I love me some 桜ふみ (SAKURA Fumi) and so will you once you get acquainted with her music. As cute and innocent as she may seem, some of her songs have been used for hardcore R-18 OVA titles such as 「RAPE! RAPE! RAPE!」. So yah, raep is bad, but the song is great. Her M3 CD does not include that one song though, it features some far lighter material that definitely fits under the 萌え umbrella. The three tracks are 「booster」, 「LOVE MOTION+POTION」 and 「Kiss~Kiss~Kiss」; the full cover art can be seen here. I couldn't find samplers for the first two songs, however 「booster」 can be downloaded from C:DRIVE (note that Toromi also has an ED track up for grabs). You can also check out her latest song 「cherish」 to get a better idea of her style.

Toromi usually has something for M3, and this time is no different. Her own offering is still being worked on, However, Pneuma Records has recently confirmed that she will be contributing two songs to their latest compilation CD 「ましん・ぽっぷVol:2- We Are Pneuma -」. According to mandichan, the first one (track #2) was previously featured on another compilation, but the second one (track #5) may be a new song because I can't find any info. Not gonna comment on the lyrical contents, because it is a little odd from this cultural perspective. Then again I just wrote about a rape OVA. Either way, I'll update this paragraph later once Toromi published info on her new release, but I'm expecting a new single.

Ever heard of doubleeleven UpperCut before? That's OK, neither had I until today, but they started in November 2009 and this will be their first release. Prepare to be blown away, especially if you're a fan of SHORT CIRCUIT and ave;new projecto (and why wouldn't you be?) because this is clearly what they're going for. The unit proudly describes itself as "high speed denpa" and is actually a sub-division of the doubleeleven undercurrent circle. Its members are 山下航生 (producer) and akari (vocals), with seemingly no prior experience.

Still, deUC (that's how they want to be abbreviated) already has 6 songs and judging by the streaming sampler, this is some high quality stuff that is a cut above the rest. Their artwork is highly professional, which leads me to believe that they are in fact associated to softhouse-seal, the eroge company which ordered all 6 of these theme songs in the first place. If you wanna see some kooky English lyrics, head over to the latest game's homepage for a few laughs. Isn't one game a month quite the turnover? Not that I'm complaining! Keep your eyes on doubleeleven UpperCut, the latest denpa sensation!

vivid'sB is another "new" circle, in the sense that I've only found out about them recently. But it's not like their main singer and apparent head honcho 西沢はぐみ has been around forever either as she released her very first album in late 2009. The album can be sampled in full on their website (no direct link, sorry), but you can also check out some of her previous work. Now the above song 「combination somebody!」, in all of its Dragon Quest lookalike glory, will obviously not be up for sale at M3 as it was just made public on April 22nd 2010. However, they will most likely repress some copies of the first CD and now's the chance to get your hands on it. Oh wouldn't you know, 柏木るざりん (Loser Kashiwagi) was a guest composer on track #7 「しゅこしゅこぼーん」, no wonder it's ultra-funky! Don't know the man??? And you call yourselves denpa fans... for shame.

And now for the BEST NEW CIRCLE NAME OF THE YEAR DECADE, introducing...... ODENPA STUDIO!!!! Yes, not joking one bit. First DenpaGumi, now おでんぱ☆スタジオ. They have so many good things going on that I don't know where to begin. Well, the awesome name, that's out of the way. Now if you head on over to their website, you'll notice that the illustrations they use are very sharp. They have their own domain name too, this says a lot. But the best aspect and not the least, is the quality of their music. The sampler MP3 for their M3 album is sort of tucked away on the main page. Then if you scroll down a bit, you'll notice there's another sampler for a C77 album that was "rejected" but was still sold at the graphic artist's own booth with an appropriate cover art.

Anyway, the name says it all, but the music ain't lying either. In their own words, this is "360 degree radiation moe-denpa" music. Too bad the website is very low on information, as most of the sections are incomplete. I can't even tell you who does what, other than this sounds too professional to be the work of a newly-formed circle. They do appear to feature two distinct vocalists. The fact that they have nearly a dozen tracks is also very suspicious... in a good way! Look forward to more details as I acquire this album.

33.turbo (pronounced mimi turbo) is yet another new denpa circle! Right now they have an M3-2010 booth, but their blog hasn't been updated since last year, so we can only assume that they're gonna have their first CD up for sale once again. 5 crazy tracks for 400 yen, I'm not complaining! Sample them for yourself, personally I'm slightly reminded of Melo9 and Toromi, so this is great! Their most recent post does mention something about the next release featuring multiple collaborations, we'll have to wait and see if they update the blog in time for May 5th.

Rapid-fire M3 news
  • IOSYS has a Touhou brass band arrange album (produced by ARM) and a programYMG drama CD.
  • Melo9 said they would have a new album for M3, but so far no news on their blog. At the very least they should have copies of their Valentine's Day CD.
  • GWAVE have uploaded the second MP3 from Team Love Bullets' upcoming single. They also have a Chuable Soft compilation up for grabs.
  • Siestail are not promising anything, but they are working on a full vocal album featuring Rizuna! If this is anything like their KERO album, this could be huge!!!!
  • DystopiaGround (Nao's doujin circle) will have a new 2-track single, no samplers or credits yet.
  • 夢月まりあ (aka maria-tan) will be selling her first mini-album 「CRAY04」 which includes four tracks listed here. No samples, but she has a million YouTube videos where you can check out her many guerrilla lives. This self-declared otaku has been known to bust out some crazy denpa songs, so this could be an interesting CD.
  • ひげいち。うぇぶ sounds like an interesting circle in theory, but sound samples are nowhere to be found. The two main members are apparently totally crazy about denpa. They already have two albums and will release a third at M3-2010春. The fact that they have album themes and track topics seems to indicate that these are in fact drama CDs.
  • Although they have an M3 booth, nothing new from Birdtune. They're probably still pushing 「すいーつぱれっと」, as they should. In related news, みりん☆ seems pleased to be featured on the 電波の世界 ~ 2009 sampler. She is working on a third album and will be playing some new songs at her upcoming concert this weekend.

[updated] MOSAIC.WAV live @ DearStage

[update 04/23/10] V-V-Video!

[update 04/22/10]
There's no video, but anican has a feature on last weekend's MOSAIC.WAV live radio event. Nice pictures! Long story short, MOSAIC.WAV played a few songs, they had a special "animedley" thing going on and DenpaGumi joined in for a few jams as well! Everything went well and they are considering doing more of these live radio events.

[original] On Sunday, April 18 2010, MOSAIC.WAV will hop on the small DearStage... stage... for a live performance. The opening guests are none other than でんぱ組.inc, which makes for a solid lineup. MOSAIC.WAV will also be recording a new episode of their 「モザイク通り」 radio show right in front of their audience. Full details here.

So why should we dirty foreigners care about yet another MOSAIC.WAV gig we'll never see on DVD? Well, DearStage have a very active UStream... stream... which they enable quite often. Unless they receive specific orders from MOSAIC.WAV's legal team not to turn it on, there's a chance it will broadcast a good chunk of the concert. The events start at 4PM Tokyo time, so 3AM Eastern and Midnight Pacific (04/18/10).

15:45~Opening

とろ美 and GENKAN MATT in English-language video series?

Hiiiiiii! My name is Toromi. Nice to meet CHU! ♥

CYBER MEDIA TV are currently probing their virtual non-Japanese audience with a test video that popped up on their youtube account just a few days ago. In a surprising twist, GENKAN MATT speaks impeccable English, as if he spent a couple of years outside of Japan. Our lovely Toromi gets the short end of the stick, but manages to end the video on a cuuuuuute note.

I think I speak on behalf on the entire Denpa no Sekai readership when I say that this project is wholeheartedly supported. Even if it's just 5 minutes long and on a monthly basis, an English-language video series featuring Toromi and GENKAN MATT roaming the streets of Akihabara would be to die for. Or you know what, just have them hanging out and chatting like they do in their other videos, with bonus points if Toromi smashes the shit out of everyone with her pokapoka hammer.

CYMEDIA seem to be pretty open to comments, so go ahead and post your suggestions. Make no mistake, this project ain't going anywhere if it doesn't give their channel more views, so spread the good word Toromi fans!

Incoming MOSAIC.WAV announcement on MOMOI's モコモコ show?

独占!モコモコ 60分』 is another example of MOMOI Haruko's internet omnipresence. But unlike her 2009 radio show (はいはい、ラジオラジオ), this live NicoNico video broadcast has her wearing all kinds of cute costumes and hosting a bunch of cool people, such as this pervy Gaijin Santa (aka Patrick from otaku2.com). Make sure to check out an x-mas version of her hit song "Wonder Momo-i" with the Clausmeister ヲタ芸ing it up hardcore in the back.

This week, MOSAIC.WAV will be her guests of honor, which is great news in itself. At the very least, we'll probably see an impromptu keytar duel between Kayapi and Haruko. But if this blog entry holds true, then they are set to announce a new project! Most likely, Momoi will formally announce her upcoming Remix CD, since amazon and cdjapan already have that info. But perhaps she will renew her Under17 collaboration with MOSAIC.WAV? There's a brief mention of the Animelo 2008 session on the official Akihabalove channel. Who knows? We all will... in a day's time.

By the way, there's an upcoming KOTOKO & MOMOI concert on May 3rd 2010 (in Shibuya). As good a time as any for I've Sound to launch SHORT CIRCUIT 3!

Upcoming MOSAIC.WAV concert is a 初音ミク Who's Who

MOSAIC.WAV just sent a communiqué revealing which special guests will perform at their upcoming concert 【We Live Heartsnative!!~ミクとMOSAIC.WAVと仲間たち~】 on February 20th 2010. Of course, mi~ko and kayapi will be flanked by expert Hatsune Miku manipulator 大串友紀 and their usual live band which consists of Big Brother 小池雅也 on guitar, クマキヒロノブ on bass and cat enthusiast 岩田ガンタ康彦 on drums.

The first guest performer to appear on stage will be cosMo@暴走P, otherwise known as one half of cosMoDRIVER. At the risk of rehashing what is probably common knowledge, his most popular composition so far would be the frivolous "Disappearance of Hatsune Miku". However, one would be remiss not to pay some heed to his earlier creations such as the balls-to-the-wall初音ミクの暴走」, one of his first songs but certainly not the least. Another fan favourite would be 「電脳スキル」, which got a chiptune remix from K-> of VORC Records fame. What's more, cosMo has begun contributing tracks to the EXIT TRANCE powerhouse since March 2009, most recently on the Vocalolegend album released on January 21 2010. So he certainly has a great source of audio material ready for his first major concert, but like any good Japanese artist, the guy also possesses some intense illustration skills.

Second on stage will be デッドボール (Deadball), which operates under the 5/4 TAKEPOD circle. Now they've only been releasing Hatsune Miku songs since early 2008, but we're talking an impressive 30+ creations in about two year's time! There's a very interesting reason behind this otherwise unexplainable surge of creativity: circle head honcho 槇タケポン worked at Nihon Falcom for two years between 2005 and 2007! Falcom are known for some of the best videogame soundtracks out there, so it's only reasonable to think that the experience he gained there helped him develop such a productive drive.

Deadball's flagship series is their Dead Ball Project compilation albums, of which there are three volumes. (1, 2, 3) After publicly releasing his first Miku song in March 2008, Takepon was approached by EXIT TUNES and this led to his first major album, which is still one of the highest ranking EXIT products on Oricon. The album also came with its very own (ridiculously hard) SHMUP game! He was also involved in SEGA's Hatsune Miku arcade/PSP game and managed to sneak a few chiptunes on the fabulous ピコ萌え! series. Even more recently, Deadball collaborated with IOSYS (who hasn't? MOSAIC.WAV, that's who) in the form of an 8bit-flavoured track on 2-dimension's latest vocal album, 「parade」, sung by MIKO. Certainly a rising star to keep your eyes on!

Famitsu is once again heavily promoting the upcoming concert, as they should. There's no word yet on whether or not they'll be freely broadcasting the event online as they did the first one, especially since this one is substantially premium-priced at 6000円. But perhaps they'll make a sneak announcement at the last minute, so keep checking back for further details.

NicoTubeDump: CYMEDIA1 and their nutso videos

CyberMedia TV (CYMEDIA1) has recently become a treasure trove of high definition Toromi videos. I'm not sure exactly what the relationship is between the two, other than I guess she works for them. The weird part is the extent of material they provide: GGW is a series of bizarre poka-poka improv / softcore panchira porn that WILL leave you scratching your head. Then they have JEWELS 6th ring or "WOMEN'S FIGHTING ENTERTAINMENT", which features hardcore freeform combat, interviews with Germany-imported boxers and English tongues twisters. They also host the newest episodes of CRAZY OTAKU WORLD OF GENKAN MATT (formerly MATT MADD THE WORLD), which Toromi is a part of. They also seem to be in charge of animating a local shrine with henshin-superhero shows and overall wackiness.

But more to the point, they also promote some denpa music, specifically Toromi's releases and the recent A-POP compilation on which she appeared. Short of going to Japan yourself, this is as close to a Toromi concert as you'll get, considering this 1080p resolution video from the Ishimaru launch event. That's a ... deep performance, barefoot and all.

Speaking of the A-POP album, I'm not sure how well it is being received, but I hope for all involved that it is selling decently. The producer herself (UEDA Sanae) appears on the following video and uses her natural charm to move a couple more units... figuratively and literally?!?

Wondering about that hardcore otaku nerd scolding the stunningly beautiful Sanae about not being on the CD? Good eye... this is none other than 東京メトロちゃん... oh wait now it's メトロポリちゃんV (or simply metrochan), an akiba-idol who became famous for her Dokuro-chan antics of clubbing to death her fans and TV hosts. The scared look on their faces is just priceless, here's another good one that ups the awkward to new heights.

Honestly, I'd welcome a metrochan full-length album with open arms, and I'd let her beat me to a bloody pulp any day of the week!!! Right now she only has a couple of singles which are pretty decent, all things told. Check out this Nicovideo medley for a better idea. By night she's a nurse, but by day she's a fairy who protects people in the subway system!!! Yeah... more in this interview. To finish things off on an even weirder note, here's a wicked crazy original denpa song/video from late last year. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a website for this Usagi-chan circle. All right fucking men, let us get a new job!!

What's that, moar you say? Hai hai, kore! A death metal version of Studio Satsuki's Fami-Mart theme, coming your way!!!
