Top 3 most underrated and overlooked denpa albums of 2011

So many great albums were released in 2011, but not all of them seemed to capture the attention they deserve. Although one would think that releasing outside of Comiket is a great way to avoid the massive overflow of new albums, it's not always that simple. Case in point, these three following albums are pure denpa crack but somehow they ended up flying under most people's radar. If you missed out on these, it's not too late as we have international purchase links for two of them, and the third can be obtained easily enough at upcoming doujin events.

Released on February 2nd 2011, 『ぱらのいあ☆らヴ』 is the fantastic debut mini-album from 白石なごむ (SHIRAISHI Nagomu). Its greatness comes from various factors that were explored in our original article, but a couple constituents bear a deeper significance. First of all, 白石なごむ clearly demonstrates a strong expertise of her vocal folds, exploring multiple ranges and tempos. This is evident in 「人畜N系パラノイド」 where she hits multiple high notes with ease and delivers charming vibrato effortlessly. At the same time, she knows exactly what her fans desire and understands precisely what denpa-moe songs are made of. She's more than happy to play along and perform silly nekoneko role-playing for our enjoyment.

Complementary to her strong vocal performance, we have good guy きくお entirely composing the album. The pair is a match made in heaven, thanks to his dynamic themes dictating direction and meticulous craftsmanship enhancing her voice. Although only having been a full-time musician for about 5 years now, きくお has developed a rather unique style which focuses on high-tension percussion (borderline drum'n'bass in some instances), providing the backdrop to charmingly retro soundscapes jam-packed with quirky and catchy melodies.

As it stands (and despite this article title), 『ぱらのいあ☆らヴ』 is not exclusively a denpa album. きくお does compose a large number of denpa songs and frequently appears on moe compilations such as the プチリズム series. 白石なごむ herself is a major 桃井はるこ fan and even sent us a tweet one day to tell us she loves denpa songs and hoped to sing many in the future! It's safe to say that this album is a sure-fire get for any denpa fan looking for something a bit more on the idol-kei side, with a hefty dose of goofiness. [order on CDJapan now]

Satsuki, where are you?

さつき が てんこもり (Satsuki ga Tenkomori) needs absolutely no introduction on this website. Not only has he created many memorable denpa songs, he has even provided us with a mini-interview and frequently namedrops 電波の世界 to his 13,000 twitter followers. Although the doujin realm remains his main playground, he has dabbled with major scene activities, reaching new heights in September 2011 with the release of his first full-length album 『ニコ生モラルハザード』.

Despite being released on such a high-profile label as dmARTS, all of Satsuki's creations retain the zaniness and jocularity that made him a household name in the first place. No punches were pulled with the lyrics and overall themes, in fact strong performances from Hamar, ゆづか姫 and みかりん* inject a far greater sense of personality than originally anticipated. Whether or not ななひら and/or kana should have been included in some capacity is a legitimate question, but at least かめりあ and y0c1e have cameos!

Bottomline is that this is a Satsuki album and that fact alone warrants a permanent place in your collection. The six new songs are delicious and tailor-made for their respective vocalists. Just like きくお beforehand, Satsuki has crafted a distinct sonority with deep groovy bass supporting high-strung harmonies, the perfect vehicle for humorous libretto performed by lovely damsels. In mid-October 2011, PARANOIA PARADOX released a surprise 100% denpa album based on ZUN's eternal creation. Now, while touhou denpa albums aren't exactly rare, they were actually few and far between in 2011. As we previously reported, there were a number of factors which also helped set 『ぱらのいあぱらどくちゅ』 apart. Behind the scene is composer and circle owner いたちま who provided 7 hyperactive and openly denpa arranges. His work here is upbeat and catchy, laced with powerful arpeggios and frequent Famison-like pulses. However, the album still has overtones of his main trance/electro techniques, which makes for a fair bit of crossover appeal.

Vocalists-wise, various performers are involved and each of them deliver flawless performances in their own capacity. Obviously the big story is that this compilation has the first Touhou arrange performance from the eclectic メトロポリちゃんV. As expected of her personality, her voice is resplendent and endearing, so let's hope for a lot more appearances in the future. The other vocalists are just as captivating, including 桜ふみ, 愛空アキハ, 佳織みちる, かごめP and 田川まゆみ. Even いたちま provides some rather unique vocals at some point!

It all comes together splendidly, yet 『ぱらのいあぱらどくちゅ』 did not seem to achieve comparable levels of hype within the (admittedly small) denpa community. Fans of Holic Service, Birdtune and denpa-oriented IOSYS songs definitely need to snap this up. It also comes with a full-color 16 page illustration book from 雪月佳. In the end it was a really considerate and surprising move from PARANOIA PARADOX to take this crazy denpa thing seriously and release a full album, not just a single throwaway song on one of their many "serious" albums.

PARANOIA PARADOX goes 電波 with 「ぱらのいあぱらどくちゅ」

Doujin circle PARANOIA PARADOX is usually known for its trance/electro/serious business "Re" Touhou arrange series, including titles such as 「RE;FLECTOR」, 「Re:alize」 and 「Re:sonance」. That's pretty cool, but dig in just a bit deeper and you'll uncover some interesting facts. First, 桜ふみ (SAKURA Fumi) is actually the lead vocalist for this circle! Recently she's popped up on a couple of KuKuDoDo compositions, so that's a good start. Next, a quick look at head producer いたちま also reveals a long history of Vocaloid compositions, including the occasional denpa song. So there's definitely a lot more than meets the eye with this circle.

However, for the release of their 6th album 『ぱらのいあぱらどくちゅ』, they are taking a page from circles such as HolicService/InnocentKey/Birdtune and will release a full-on denpa/moe album! This 180 degree turn also brings about a grand total of 10 guests, not the least of which is メトロポリちゃんV making her grand Touhou vocal debut! Yes, you read that right. Metro-motherfucking-Pori-chan, full-time nurse, goddess of underground trains, born in 1941. Don't say you don't know who she is, or she'll fucking beat the crap out of you!

Regardless of your opinion of this shock-jock-idol, her performance on 「てゐのデート大決戦脳内戦略会議室!!」 is flawless. From the short sample posted, she comes off joyous and ecstatic. It's a wonder this is her debut doujin song after being a part of the underground scene for such a long time. Has she performed various denpa songs under a different moniker or is she really just that good?!? Let's hope for more collaborations in the future!

The other songs on the sampler are just as catchy. Regular PP vocalist 桜ふみ takes care of the third track 「たぬきにおまかせ☆」 (the first being a splendid instrumental introduction). Her unique and commanding voice radiates maturity and experience... gotta love her vibrato! Never gets old OR annoying! Track 4 「Blooming moon」 is a heart-warming 萌え ditty from 佳織みちる , who also writes her own lyrics.

Yet another highlight of this new album is 「うぇるかむ・とぅざ・なずーりんりんらんど」 sung expertly by 愛空アキハ. Y'all know her from her various Conagusuri hits such as 「チルミルチルノ」 and 「カパネットにとり」 of course. Once again she demonstrates her passion for the genre and delivers an intense performance. This is followed right away with another high-tension track 「アリアケ幻想」, this time from 田川まゆみ. The album ends lightly with another cute little moe song 「猫娘☆ぱらだい☆CHU♪」

As with all of their past releases, PARANOIA PARADOX have turned to 雪月佳 for the album artwork. The interesting connection here is that 雪月佳 also provided the illustration for the recent ななひら UTAU album 『なないずむ!』. Just one more element in making sure this becomes a memorable Touhou Denpa albums... since most of them are, so it's a tough crowd! The album comes out October 17th during the 7th 東方紅楼夢 event, but you can also preorder from Akibaoo.

Seventh Holic Service album 『二度づけ禁止塾!』 out today

A mere month ago, we were reporting on Birdtune's long-awaited return to form with the release of their new C80 album 『東方ピコピコ祭り』. Well Lord KuKuDoDo hasn't forgotten about his other label Holic Service either, although no one could predict the wait would be so short! Introducing 『二度づけ禁止塾!』, the seventh touhou denpa arrange album in a long line of acclaimed releases. Unlike pre-2011 Holic Service albums which saw guest composers such as 未来派 and t+pazolite, this one is 100% arranged by KuKuDoDo... the man is on fire! Here's the crossfade sampler and tracklist.

TrackTitleVocalsOriginal
01答え)マリアリ ←正解 小宮真央恋色マスタースパーク
02Bad DENPA Apple!!(実在する団体名とは一切関係ありません)実谷ななBad Apple!!

Quite a lot of interesting facts on this tracklist, so let's get down to it. You'll notice most of the songs have really long titles, there's definitely a lot of humor involved. The first track features 小宮真央 doing vocals in a range that's slightly surprising for such a light-hearted song, but still very fitting. Then we have 実谷なな doing "Bad DENPA Apple!!" with her trademark range, over a dark yet groovy arrange that stands its own in a sea of remakes. Next is a brutal re-imagining of おてんば恋娘 that features heavily distorted guitar and powerful drums, something which isn't traditionally associated with KuKuDoDo! Definitely an experimental track that ends up sounding pretty good, not to mention Gumi made sure to go with an appropriate singing pitch.

Track 4 goes back to wild denpa style with 小岩井ゆづき going crazy over an equally insane remix. Definitely seems like a highlight of the album based on the short sampler! But then 桜ふみ kicks in with her splendid voice. You can easily tell this girl has lots and lots of experience in the 'biz, it's good to see her and KuKuDoDo seem to be on good terms! Gumi then gets another slower track, although this one feels a lot deeper and upbeat than you'd expect. Finally, Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia brings the album to an end with a wacky rap on what feels like the most turbo-charged denpa anthem of the album. Great way to wrap up this party!

Another point of interest is the superb cover designed by 朱シオ, which features Cirno going commando with a mere ice shard conveniently getting in the way of a full pantyless upskirt... from a distance it definitely looks like... something else. Definitely going to attract lots of attention! This is a good thing!!! Overall this is definitely a worthy Holic Service album and it's good to see that KuKuDoDo manages to try new things while understanding exactly what his fans expect from him. It's not part of the "エネルギー冷麺" series, which sorely needs a revival after 2 years... but we're keeping our fingers crossed for C81!

For now, you can purchase 『二度づけ禁止塾!』 from the following websites (we recommend www.dv8cag.com for international shipping)

  1. Akibaoo
  2. Toranoana

C80: Celebrate KuKuDoDo with Birdtune's 『東方ピコピコ祭り』

It's been 1.5 years since the last Touhou arrange release from Birdtune and frankly, we were getting a little worried. Although the circle is relatively young having started in 2008, they've built an impressive legacy of fantastic albums (both original and touhou arrange) and frequent live appearances. But they've lost a bit of steam since their main vocalist みりん☆ "graduated" (read: hasn't done much since) shortly after the release of her May 2010 album 『アタラセカイ』. Since Birdtune is highly-regarded by denpa fans worldwide thanks to multiple creative albums, it would have been a shame for them to bite the dust so suddenly.

No way... do you think Lord KuKuDoDo would give up this easily? Enter their new in-house vocalist: nanano. Not much is known about the mysterious new singer, other than a couple posts on her blog and a hell of a debut! Actually she was also on HolicService's 『ニヒリズム!」 in May 2011 but let's not mix things up. She is officially attached to Birdtune and as you can see from the tracklist below, she's also very much in charge of lyrics. Otherwise she's also taking care of the new website and hopefully she'll be keeping KuKuDoDo's ass in gear to make sure he focuses on creating more albums!

Which brings us to 『東方ピコピコ祭り』, a full-on KuKuDoDo effort! His sharp, unique and refreshing style can be found on every single track, which almost turns this into a concept album compared to the previous compilations. As expected, there's a large percentage of straight-up denpa and ピコピコ songs, which this author would like to think is due to a personal request during our last meeting (hah!) Of course KuKuDoDo's requisite NewWave touch can be felt everywhere, since he's such a big fan of early eighties Synth Pop bands... but we already discussed all of his influences in the past!

Here's the awesome crossfade video, followed by the album tracklist. Feel free to download the MP3 as well. Please note that all instrumental tracks are included on the CD! A second promo video for the song 「小町ちゃんの超すごい三途の川ツアー」 (featuring nanano on vocals) should be uploaded just after Comiket 80.

Track Title Vocals Arranger Lyrics Original

How awesome is 桜ふみ singing on a Birdtune album eh? This collaboration is likely due to KuKuDoDo having composed a song on her second album 『』 back in October 2010. You might have heard 小岩井ゆづき on some of 2-Dimension's CDs, but still... WOW give us MORE! 小宮真央 is also a great fit for any Birdtune/Holic Service album, always good to hear her sweet little voice. Too bad Gumi didn't get to sing, although she did write some cool lyrics (especially 「秋葉原での日常」) Of course all the girls performed admirably but overall, we're extremely excited about nanano joining Birdtune and can't wait to see what's next!

M3-2010秋 round-up: iDOLST@GE, SteinGarCoo, 33.turbo + more

Compared to the spring edition of M3-2010 which spawned two large articles, this upcoming fall edition round-up is a bit lighter. Perhaps it has to do with the massive shift to Touhou arranges (which are more or less absent from M3), or perhaps circles are just focusing their efforts for Comiket 79. Either way, there are still quite a few interesting releases for denpa/moe fans. If you wish to purchase any of the following releases, note that doujincore.com is running an M3 group import until October 29th.

Let's start things up with something a little different, but still totally related to this blog. Doujin circle Zero-Shaft has been working on its iDOLST@GE series for around two years, yet they will finally release their first album this coming Sunday. The appropriately-titled 「FirstSt@ge」 packs 13 new songs and an intro, which you can sample on the official website. If you like what you hear, go ahead and download full versions of their 13 previous songs.

At first sight this might seem like an iDOLM@STER arrange album, but everything here is original... except for the concept of course. It's also worth noting that some of the singers have also been involved in denpa projects. There's the delightful ココ of course, who is regularly featured on  (the good) Innocent Key albums. Then you also have 小宮真央, who appeared on the quintessential denpa masterpiece 「エネルギー冷麺 お受験せんそ→☆」 from KuKuDoDo's Holic Service. But whether you know the girls or not shouldn't matter anyway; it's all about the execution and this doujin release certainly rivals Namco's own output.

したいがぁるくぅ (apparently romanized to Stein Gar Coo) is an interesting new unit. They've been around since August 2009 and have two mini-CDs under their belt, with a third one dropping this weekend. The first (self-titled) CD was created under the theme of "yanderock" and had a cute girl with a big pair of bloody scissors on the cover. For a debut, the songs are actually pretty good. You'd think they would have continued in that direction, but somehow they followed it up with a superhero drama CD...

Now they're back with a musical album, and a denpa themed one at that! Although they have offered very few details about the upcoming 「sweeCHU kiss」 mini-album, they have repeatedly stated on their blog that this will be denpa-kei. The imagery sort of gives it away, but this circle introduction video has a very short sample (we're talking less than 20 seconds). Either way, we here at 電波の世界 fully support new denpa units so let's give them the benefit of the doubt until they release longer samples.

UPDATE: They have released a sample MP3. Furthermore, ベイビー・レモネード from melo9/おでんぱ☆スタジオ will be a guest artist!

Good old おでんぱ☆スタジオ have been regular M3/Comiket fixtures ever since their late 2009 debut. Their discipline is second to none when it comes to releasing new music, let's just hope they keep working hard until they reach that next level. This time the odenpa girls are fighting it out at an athletic meet; school's back after all. There will be a "three-legged race" song, how often does that happen? No doubt countless (sexy) mishaps will happen during this brutal sporting event. Unfortunately, no samples are available right now, keep checking the official website for an eventual update.

33.turbo is a cute little denpa/moe unit that sporadically releases singles every now and then. For their M3 single, they took three "little sister" stereotypes (yandere, malicious, righteous) and created four songs out of them. Presumably the fourth one has the trio singing, but the niconico sample only lets us preview the first three songs. Their previous single featured four arranged K-On! songs, so it's good to see them go back to original compositions.

The last time 桜ふみ (SAKURA Fumi) was featured on this blog was also her first. This girl is all over the place: touhou arranges, iDOLM@STER DS, countless eroge theme songs... and don't you dare stop her. 「SIGMA] is her second full-length album, which features both commercial work and brand new songs. One of them is particularly interesting: track #3 「ウイステリア」 was composed by KuKu-motherfucking-DoDo himself. There's also a killer MUZIK SERVANT track; they're all pretty good anyway. If you're looking for some high octane pop/rock with mature female vocals, then this is definitely worth checking out.

That's it for now, but there are a couple more interesting releases in the "denpa watchlist" to your right. Toromi is supposed to have something new. nao/DystopiaGround has a third single coming out. We'll update this post with new releases as they are announced, perhaps even after M3 has passed.

M3-2010春 電波ソング round-up

The spring edition of M3-2010 is just around the corner (May 5th), so here are some of the upcoming denpa-related albums worth checking out. Note that I've probably overlooked a bunch of them, so feel free to throw in your comments. As always, M3 runs a solid news page that gets pretty busy once the event approaches.

The first item on our shopping list is certainly the most curious one: it's a MOSAIC.WAV arrange album!!! At first I was like O(≧∇≦)O but then I was like ( ̄へ ̄). See, 「もざいくりこーだーvol.1」 features 8 MOSAIC.WAV songs played... on recorders. In fact, various flutes were used and they're all described in the opening minute of this sampler video. Do you like what you hear? I may end up buying this to support my fellow fans, but I'm just not that enticed by the results. But whether or not flute is your thing, you can't deny that the folks in the とらふえ circle are extremely talented, as this is actually their fourth album. Furthermore, the jacket artwork by Candy5 is pretty damn cool and this thing is just 600 yen!

Remember unMOMENT? Yeah, I miss them too. They had a ton of potential, but just drifted off into nothingness after the release of their one and only album 「萌魂 ~moe spirit~」 in 2006. オカザキシュン (OKAZAKI Shun) and 新堂真弓 (SHINDOU Mayumi) were backed on guitar by none other than 小池雅也 (KOIKE Masaya, aka big brother) and collaborated with MOSAIC.WAV among others. Both songstresses are still active but Okazaki is pretty much dedicated to BGM composition with 4-EVER. This brings us to Shindou and her brand new compilation album 「新堂真弓 AKIBA SOUND BEST」. While available for public consumption on May 21st, 100 copies will be sold at M3 (presumably a limited edition). The CD features a whopping 17 tracks, with her most popular song 「SHE SEE LOVE」 appropriately starting it all. Samples and commentary available on Candypop's website. Denpa fans: this is a must-buy!

I love me some 桜ふみ (SAKURA Fumi) and so will you once you get acquainted with her music. As cute and innocent as she may seem, some of her songs have been used for hardcore R-18 OVA titles such as 「RAPE! RAPE! RAPE!」. So yah, raep is bad, but the song is great. Her M3 CD does not include that one song though, it features some far lighter material that definitely fits under the 萌え umbrella. The three tracks are 「booster」, 「LOVE MOTION+POTION」 and 「Kiss~Kiss~Kiss」; the full cover art can be seen here. I couldn't find samplers for the first two songs, however 「booster」 can be downloaded from C:DRIVE (note that Toromi also has an ED track up for grabs). You can also check out her latest song 「cherish」 to get a better idea of her style.

Toromi usually has something for M3, and this time is no different. Her own offering is still being worked on, However, Pneuma Records has recently confirmed that she will be contributing two songs to their latest compilation CD 「ましん・ぽっぷVol:2- We Are Pneuma -」. According to mandichan, the first one (track #2) was previously featured on another compilation, but the second one (track #5) may be a new song because I can't find any info. Not gonna comment on the lyrical contents, because it is a little odd from this cultural perspective. Then again I just wrote about a rape OVA. Either way, I'll update this paragraph later once Toromi published info on her new release, but I'm expecting a new single.

Ever heard of doubleeleven UpperCut before? That's OK, neither had I until today, but they started in November 2009 and this will be their first release. Prepare to be blown away, especially if you're a fan of SHORT CIRCUIT and ave;new projecto (and why wouldn't you be?) because this is clearly what they're going for. The unit proudly describes itself as "high speed denpa" and is actually a sub-division of the doubleeleven undercurrent circle. Its members are 山下航生 (producer) and akari (vocals), with seemingly no prior experience.

Still, deUC (that's how they want to be abbreviated) already has 6 songs and judging by the streaming sampler, this is some high quality stuff that is a cut above the rest. Their artwork is highly professional, which leads me to believe that they are in fact associated to softhouse-seal, the eroge company which ordered all 6 of these theme songs in the first place. If you wanna see some kooky English lyrics, head over to the latest game's homepage for a few laughs. Isn't one game a month quite the turnover? Not that I'm complaining! Keep your eyes on doubleeleven UpperCut, the latest denpa sensation!

vivid'sB is another "new" circle, in the sense that I've only found out about them recently. But it's not like their main singer and apparent head honcho 西沢はぐみ has been around forever either as she released her very first album in late 2009. The album can be sampled in full on their website (no direct link, sorry), but you can also check out some of her previous work. Now the above song 「combination somebody!」, in all of its Dragon Quest lookalike glory, will obviously not be up for sale at M3 as it was just made public on April 22nd 2010. However, they will most likely repress some copies of the first CD and now's the chance to get your hands on it. Oh wouldn't you know, 柏木るざりん (Loser Kashiwagi) was a guest composer on track #7 「しゅこしゅこぼーん」, no wonder it's ultra-funky! Don't know the man??? And you call yourselves denpa fans... for shame.

And now for the BEST NEW CIRCLE NAME OF THE YEAR DECADE, introducing...... ODENPA STUDIO!!!! Yes, not joking one bit. First DenpaGumi, now おでんぱ☆スタジオ. They have so many good things going on that I don't know where to begin. Well, the awesome name, that's out of the way. Now if you head on over to their website, you'll notice that the illustrations they use are very sharp. They have their own domain name too, this says a lot. But the best aspect and not the least, is the quality of their music. The sampler MP3 for their M3 album is sort of tucked away on the main page. Then if you scroll down a bit, you'll notice there's another sampler for a C77 album that was "rejected" but was still sold at the graphic artist's own booth with an appropriate cover art.

Anyway, the name says it all, but the music ain't lying either. In their own words, this is "360 degree radiation moe-denpa" music. Too bad the website is very low on information, as most of the sections are incomplete. I can't even tell you who does what, other than this sounds too professional to be the work of a newly-formed circle. They do appear to feature two distinct vocalists. The fact that they have nearly a dozen tracks is also very suspicious... in a good way! Look forward to more details as I acquire this album.

33.turbo (pronounced mimi turbo) is yet another new denpa circle! Right now they have an M3-2010 booth, but their blog hasn't been updated since last year, so we can only assume that they're gonna have their first CD up for sale once again. 5 crazy tracks for 400 yen, I'm not complaining! Sample them for yourself, personally I'm slightly reminded of Melo9 and Toromi, so this is great! Their most recent post does mention something about the next release featuring multiple collaborations, we'll have to wait and see if they update the blog in time for May 5th.

Rapid-fire M3 news
  • IOSYS has a Touhou brass band arrange album (produced by ARM) and a programYMG drama CD.
  • Melo9 said they would have a new album for M3, but so far no news on their blog. At the very least they should have copies of their Valentine's Day CD.
  • GWAVE have uploaded the second MP3 from Team Love Bullets' upcoming single. They also have a Chuable Soft compilation up for grabs.
  • Siestail are not promising anything, but they are working on a full vocal album featuring Rizuna! If this is anything like their KERO album, this could be huge!!!!
  • DystopiaGround (Nao's doujin circle) will have a new 2-track single, no samplers or credits yet.
  • 夢月まりあ (aka maria-tan) will be selling her first mini-album 「CRAY04」 which includes four tracks listed here. No samples, but she has a million YouTube videos where you can check out her many guerrilla lives. This self-declared otaku has been known to bust out some crazy denpa songs, so this could be an interesting CD.
  • ひげいち。うぇぶ sounds like an interesting circle in theory, but sound samples are nowhere to be found. The two main members are apparently totally crazy about denpa. They already have two albums and will release a third at M3-2010春. The fact that they have album themes and track topics seems to indicate that these are in fact drama CDs.
  • Although they have an M3 booth, nothing new from Birdtune. They're probably still pushing 「すいーつぱれっと」, as they should. In related news, みりん☆ seems pleased to be featured on the 電波の世界 ~ 2009 sampler. She is working on a third album and will be playing some new songs at her upcoming concert this weekend.
