Denpa collection for sale!

UPDATE 2019-09-28: SOLD!!! Watch this space for an eventual online project which may feature parts of this collection. Thanks again to EVERYONE who contacted me, whether for a few CDs or the whole thing, or just to drop some kind words my way. Special mention to all the denpa thread anons. Much appreciated!

Hi folks, long time no talk! I've been busy with real life stuff and although I still check into the latest denpa news every once in a while, I'm closing a big chapter in my life. I've thought about this for a long time and the day has finally come: I'm selling my denpa collection! Of course I'm doing this to fuel my untappd addiction to put my kids through college (yes, that'll do), but I'd like to think someone out there will really enjoy owning these CDs rather than them just staying in the closet for another 5 years.

Named by yours truly, now yours to own!

You're looking at more than 200 items from the 2007-2014 era, mainly CDs but also a fair amount of swag such as bags, books and posters too. The crown jewel is by far the Extravagantly-Extra-Equipped Edition of MOSAIC.WAV's 5th album, but there's plenty of obscure trudenpa stuff too. You have near-complete collections from Odenpa Studio, 33.turbo, ちぃむdmp☆, Holic Service, Birdtune, etc.

Psst... I heard you like odenpa studio?

Everything is in great-to-mint condition, with the overwhelming majority of items still being sealed. A few of them have cracked cases (very minor), mostly due to shipping from Japan. Almost all of these were bought directly at Comiket/M3/you name it.

プチリズム fullset!

I've inventoried every single item in this handy Google sheet, including closeup pictures and links to the best source of information I could find about each item. I can absolutely take more pictures or provide more details on request.

Now regarding price. Shit man, I don't know. What I do know is it will probably cost a buttfuck and a half to ship this stuff over to your place. All items are located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in case you can do local pickup. Otherwise, I want to say I am flexible and open to offers and I am neither expecting a couple hundred nor a couple thousands dollars. But.... somewhere in between.

"And now for my next number, I'd like to return to the classics"

M3-2013春: KuKuDoDo feat. 初音ミク full album 「oldwave and rare」

I woke up this morning to a pleasant email from KuKuDoDo, asking me to check out the Birdtune website for full details on his upcoming 初音ミク album 「oldwave and rare」, coming out April 27th 2013 at THE VOC@LOiD 超 M@STER24! In his own words, the album contains "rare, early and unreleased" tracks from both Birdtune and Holic Service circles; remixed, remastered and lovingly rearranged with catchy 初音ミク vocals on top.

Long-time fans will immediately recognize what's what. For instance, "大好き!バイバイ。" is originally from 2008, but was also on the 2009 みりん☆ album 「ピコピコ電波予報」. The new remixed version has a different pitch and is perhaps heavier on the percussions. On the other hand, opening track "健康ランド" sounds about the same as the late 2010 original, which is hardly an issue considering this song made it to our annual sampler for that year. Those who own 「~VOC@LOID Songs & Legacy Modules~」 and watched the "making of" video know just how much effort KuKuDoDo put into composing this song!

So far so good, but things get really interesting with "Oh! Sick more sit down". From what this fan can tell, it seems to be a heavily remixed version of "もうパソコンしかいらない人の歌" from Birdtune's 2011 revival album 「東方ピコピコ祭り」. You also have "hallucination attack" tracks like "FARAWAY" which illustrate KuKuDoDo's love for UK New Wave. "雨のプリズム" is another 初音ミク-to-みりん☆-to-初音ミク double conversion which you may have heard before. It was also released as "四文字熟語でレッスンなんです!" (performed by 小宮真央, ゆきまめ and Gumi) on 2009's 「エネルギー冷麺 お受験せんそ→☆」 A.K.A. still-the-best-damn-fucking-touhou-denpa-album-ever-made.

Just so no one jumps to conclusions, this is not the solo album KuKuDoDo promised last year. The latest update is that the man is hard at work on various projects outside of doujin for the moment being. I also assume he expended considerable energy putting together the latest nanano album as well as this new 初音ミク album. Still, he is prototyping various experimental elements as we speak but he is definitely on a "my own pace" schedule. On a related subject, did you know that 中原みりん is back to writing lyrics for KuKuDoDo? Everything is right with the world again!

M3-2013春: First nanano original album 「ナナノ☆マジカル」

2012 was a great year for Birdtune, thanks to two amazing Touhou arrange albums that established nanano as a force to be reckoned with. More than just a cute voice, this girl put on her producer hat and completely supervised the release of 「東方惑星探検隊!」 which also did a great job of featuring her various vocal ranges. A year later, she's preparing for the biggest moment of her life: her debut album 「ナナノ☆マジカル」 will be released April 29th 2013 with eight original songs!

Not only will this be a fantastic album for fans to enjoy (considering the splendid crossfade preview), it also marks a return to source of sorts for Birdtune. As revealed by KuKuDoDo himself (although plain to see) Birdtune initially focused on original albums while Holic Service would handle all Touhou arranges. In fact, Birdtune hasn't released original albums since 「アタラセカイ」 in May 2010, so 「ナナノ☆マジカル」 was long overdue in more ways than one! Of course we're all expecting KuKuDoDo's solo album sometime this year as well!

But back to the subject at hand. nanano is about to take us on a magical girl trip and all fans of 萌え and 電波 music are invited! All eight tracks sound great, good pacing and high tempo. I daresay that "僕達おんなのこ★" even reminds me of Queen モモーイ and her own transformation anthem "WONDER MOMO-I"! Whoever this mysterious はる composer is, he sure loves wacky, aggressive and unique synth-pop! Also worth noting that Holic Service's own Gumi pitches in on lyrics, great teamwork!

This has the makings of a memorable denpa album, so I highly suggest putting it on your M3 shopping list!

Update 04/23/2013: I managed to get a little more information about this "mysterious composer" はる. KuKuDoDo told me that while not officially a member of BirdTune, he felt はる was the "best man for the job", so you can tell he trusts him immensely. Turns out he also operates under "NATE a.k.a DJ loup-garou" and you can follow him on twitter as well as check out his soundcloud uploads. What blows my mind right now is that even though nanano's debut CD is mostly full-on denpa songs, his other creations revolve around hardcore, trance and gabber! I often said there's huge crossover potential between denpa and hardcore, this is just one more example! This is a truly talented individual and I really look forward to hearing more from はる!

Top 3 most underrated and overlooked denpa albums of 2012

About the same time last year, we took at look at three fantastic albums which seemed to have flown right under everyone's radar. But what exactly makes these albums "underrated" or "overlooked"? Pure personal opinion. I can't exactly walk into every denpa fan's home and inspect their CD library to see what they're missing out on. Rather, I came up with this "top 3" based on personal introspection and some degree of extrapolation. I am, after all, privy to certain information such as site searches, retweet popularity and personal queries, all of which helped me establish the following as niche-in-niche.

It's no secret that I fucking love KuKuDoDo and everything that this crazy genius comes up with. I've been following Holic Service and Birdtune ever since both labels started and haven't skipped a single album. One of my personal highlights of 2012 was an interview with this legendary composer. Four years down the line... one might wonder why they aren't "bigger" after releasing so many albums. Live concerts are few and far between and both labels often seem to go on hiatus or information blackout. Some dark rumours on the internets probably aren't helping, also it's pretty obvious that the whole New Wave-cross-denpa style isn't for everyone. The fact that most of their new songs are Touhou arranges suggests that their few original albums didn't fly off the shelves (or M3 tables).

The ridiculously-titled 「妹達のお尻が臭かったので、戦わせることにした!」 is one of 2012's most powerful Touhou denpa albums, but it didn't seem to light up the interwebs with red-hot hype. It's packed with quality vocalists, some all-star guest arrangers and it features the very best of KuKuDoDo this far. As far as I'm concerned, 2009's Holy Grail 「エネルギー冷麺 お受験せんそ→☆」 has been surpassed and that was no small feat. However, I just don't see that many people ranting about the new album and its crazy songs. I mean, weren't we all waiting for lyrics about SQL love injection?

Of course, this doesn't mean that their albums don't sell at all; we wouldn't be getting new Holic Service and Birdtune releases if they were produced at a loss. In fact, I feel that they have a very dedicated fanbase that does not necessarily grow with every passing year, else we'd be getting nanano-flavoured lollipops at 7-eleven. At least loyal listeners have been rewarded with the promise of a solo KuKuDoDo album sometime in 2013, as well as some "exciting" stuff for the next M3. So I'll just take what I get and keep doing my best to spread the good word, hopefully getting them new fans in the process.

cello (of beatlogic records) released a heck of a solo single in August 2012. This is denpa for the punk rockers out there. Fast as fuck, crazy as hell. Probably too weird for the masses, but exactly what yours truly expects from wacky Japan. In 12:22 minutes, cello delivers 10 furious tunes (you work out the average length). Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but many tracks seem to be above 250BPM, which is some speedcore-level shit. Most song structures indicate that cello is probably a fan of old NYHC bands (heavy guitars, relentless drums, circle pit parts) so he gets infinite respect points on that one.

The other, not-guitar-driven category of songs clearly shows his love for MOSAIC.WAV and respect for other contemporary composer peers. I'm sure Kayapi would appreciate the ultra-silly 「擬音祭」 and title track 「eLekSoNicRusHeRRRRRR!!!」 would definitely get a stamp of approval from t+pazolite. This single is definitely hardcore for the hardcore, whether you're into punk or electronica (or both). Not a single sleeper here, much less stinker. And get a load of that cover!

Did I mention that the vocals are all 初音ミク? No, that's because for once I'm not bothered at all that a real human isn't singing. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love what Lord Tenkomori and Master Katahotori can produce, but I much prefer cute girls giving it their best shot. In fact I would still like to see what cello could accomplish with real vocals, but as far as vocaloids are concerned, this is some of the most extreme usage I've ever heard. The guy's a hard worker, check out his new label "No Touch Records" if you're really into off-the-wall vocaloid stuff.

For all these reasons and more, it's pretty sad that his skills aren't being recognized. When I asked him over on twitter if there would be a second volume of his first compilation album 「シュミックトリガ! -New wave of A-POP-」 he seemed to indicate that he'd have to burn through remaining copies first. I've done my part and really hope to hear more from this creative composer in the near future, so consider doing yours if you like what you hear!

MilliRobo.beta got together in early 2011 and released their first album 「ミニロボベータ!」 almost two years later, in December 2012. Since it was released just a month ago, does it really qualify for this top 3? Sure, because I'm afraid it will be overlooked in the long run. It was announced just four days before C83 so few people reported the news, much less knew about it when they made their shopping list final. Because we all know you don't wanna go to Comiket without a plan. So, it feels to me as though there's very little hype around one of the most original releases of 2012.

Now I don't know if their ambitions are doujin-only, but packaged properly, this duo has what it takes to make it as big as アーバンギャルド on an international level. There's lots of people out there who prefer dark and twisted music, you just have to reach their ears. The dual male/female vocals make for great (and disturbing) dialogue situations. Unlike their contemporary squeaky clean peers SHAKING PINK, MilliRobo.beta aren't likely to get eroge OP offers with their dissonant and cacophonous style, nor is that something they would necessarily pursue. Live performances will also be few and far between if they happen at all.

But, along with distinctive art, one thing they already got right and that they should keep doing is pushing out videos. So far they have three of them out there, which is likely how most of their listeners to this day got to know them. If you haven't already, spend some time watching the deliciously tortuous 家想要塞メルヘン (animated!), 恋人サンディは明後日笑う and トテモトモタチ. Other than that, they'll have to rely on random buzz and word of mouth, which is what this fan hopes to accomplish with this article.

Everyone, spread the word about KuKuDoDo, beatlogic and MilliRobo.beta!

Exclusive KuKuDoDo Interview (Holic Service / Birdtune)

BirdTune and Holic Service are two well-known Osaka-based doujin circles specializing in Touhou arranges, among other things. Most fans are familiar with their music, but what about the man behind the synthesizer? Over the past three years, I've developed something of an obsession over KuKuDoDo (his name is really fun to say, try it out loud) and his strange-yet-completely-natural mixture of denpa and UK New Wave genres.

Not only are his compositions and arrangements unique, he has always had a knack for recognizing talent as well. Over the years he's collaborated with and featured songs from stalwarts such as t+pazolite, かめりあ, リズナ, 実谷なな, 桜ふみ, めらみぽっぷ, ななひら, ゆきまめ, 未来派 and plenty more.

If the names Holic Service, BirdTune, KuKuDoDo, Gumi and nanano don't mean much to you, start by checking out websites for Holic Service and BirdTune, as well as our 2009 "under the scope" feature to discover some of the most original denpa songs out there.

Please note that all following MP3s have been uploaded with KuKuDoDo's full consent.

- How did you start creating music?

I started creating music well before computer software made everything much easier, so I had to get creative. For instance I would chain up multiple beatboxes and synthesizers together. The end result would often be strange sounds, which I tremendously enjoyed. After a while, I eventually turned to a Yamaha MSX PC and gradually made my way up through the generations of music sofware and DAWs.

At some point I decided to form a band in order to release this music and perform it live. A couple records came out of this and I got the occasion to play synthesizer at multiple club events with various genres such as trance, techno and shoegazer. Over time, it struck me how much New Wave had in common with denpa, vocaloid and doujin music in general. That's why I started BirdTune Records in 2007, as it was clear to me that this would become the best outfit for my artistic expressions.

C82: Holic Service vs. Birdtune 「妹達のお尻が臭かったので、戦わせることにした!」 & 「東方惑星探検隊!」

Birdtune and Holic Service are about to wage an epic, yet completely unecessary war, all for our very own enjoyment. Even though both studios are actually operated by KuKuDoDo himself, they are going head-to-head on 「妹達のお尻が臭かったので、戦わせることにした!」 which releases August 11th 2012. Nevermind the stinky title, direct your attention to the tracklist below and witness its mix of fresh and proven talent!

  1. ね・ね・ね・ねこ・ねこ注入! [mp3]
    Vocals: nanano, Arrange: 吉田省吾
  2. strawberry ga cirno!! [mp3]
    Vocals: なな, Arrange: ほりっくさーびす
  3. 恋する感染ぱにぱにっく★ [mp3]
    Vocals: AZU, Arrange: ばーどちゅーん
  4. 初恋コントローラー 大阪弁ver [mp3]
    Vocals: りこ。, Arrange: ほりっくさーびす
  5. 麻雀はじめま専科? [mp3]
    Vocals: nanano, Arrange: ばーどちゅーん
  6. レンアイスイッチヒッター! [mp3]
    Vocals: Gumi, Arrange: かめりあ
  7. もみにゃんを上品に愛でてみるテスト [mp3]
    Vocals: nanano, Arrange: ばーどちゅーん
  8. 見よ!ロリコンは赤く燃えている! [mp3]
    Vocals: りこ。, Arrange: Makinalot
  9. とある辻ヒーラーの日常 [mp3]
    Vocals: nanano, Arrange: 吉田省吾
  10. あっぷるサイダ@ [mp3]
    Vocals: なな, Arrange: ほりっくさーびす

That's right! After a presence on the latest Birdtune release, our homeboy かめりあ is now on a Holic Service album... with Gumi singing, no less! The lovely りこ。 also appears on two tracks, bringing her sweet vocals to the plate. Know 吉田省吾 of Aintops fame? You probably do, but just in case, he's a frequent Zero-Shaft and ななひら collaborator.

AZU and なな are new to the scene, especially AZU which just started uploading covers in 2012. Both of their voices are perfect for denpa! Makinalot is the only unknown arranger here, but that status won't stick for long if he keeps pumping out such hard-hitting tunes!

This leaves us with nanano and good old new-wave-obsessed-KuKu-motherfucking-DoDo (operating under both label names). It's really impressive how nanano rose to the task in such a short time, not only as a vocalist but also as a producer for Birdtune. As with many of KuKuDoDo's albums, buying it is a no-brainer, but if you're somehow on the fence, make sure you spin these samples a couple more times. This is definitely high-quality denpa!!

例大祭9: Birdtune, Innocent Key, Forest Pireo, IOSYS + more

Not a single post in over a month, boy have we gotten lazy! The ninth annual Reitaisai event took place on May 27th 2012, where thousands of new albums were released. Although we're past fashionably late on this article, let's take a quick look at some of the most interesting stuff for denpa fans. You can still order most of these through Toranoana or MelonBooks, just check each individual album's page.

First up is 「東方惑星探検隊!」 which is a brand new album from beloved studio Birdtune! What's most interesting here is that nanano is handling producer duties, which leaves KuKuDoDo extra time to focus on his side projects (such as a boy band?). Speaking of whom, he's not the only arranger on board this time around. Make way for child prodigy かめりあ and his ridiculously catchy remixes! We have another newcomer in 麻痺 who provides a sweet intro and another track with slight hardcore edges. nanano is doing vocals on most tracks, except for a guest performance by まこと. Very cool to see Birdtune alive and kicking after a few shaky years.

Innocent Key is another popular studio 'round these parts, especially since they've stepped up the quality in the past couple years. Their (believe it or not) 21st album 「東方ぺろぺろ」 is yet another example of just what yohine and 溝口ゆうま can do. You can always count on ココ and 大瀬良あい to provide unique vocals, but Nimo, めらみぽっぷ and quite a few others are also on board. This album seems to have more of a focus on lovely pop and lush soundscapes (including a few hilarious drama tracks), but rest assured pure denpa songs such as 「さとりと こいしの ランデヴー☆」 will titillate your sense of hearing.

Next we have monoROSETTA, an IOSYS spin-off that's definitely paid its dues at this point. Their second touhou arrange album 「Sweet Beat TV」 is seven tracks of stylish pop à la older Capsule. IOSYS mainstay void once again arranges all tracks, but this time we have guest vocals such as めらみぽっぷ and even 野宮あゆみ. It's a wonderful package of bubble-gum pop that's sure to put a smile on your face.

Forest Pireo keeps getting better and better which each release, which now go to 19! Although it's not very clear what sets 「T★GIRLS.03」 apart from their other releases, it definitely has a focus on "cute and sexy arrangements" and thus has slightly more moe/denpa content than usual. Prepare to be blown away right as the first track drops, since it features Lord Tenkomori with 月葉 on vocals, their second performance together since C80's explosive 「じゃあ僕もう二度寝の歌作りますよ!」 which made it to our "best of 2011" article. Then you have another killer pair in the form of めらみぽっぷ with Good Guy きくお. かめりあ with みぃしゃ? ななひら? kana? Y'all betcha. Seriously, quality album right there, make sure this one's in your collection!

Even though it's long played second fiddle to the mainline albums, the "東方アゲハ" side-project has become a fully-featured denpa series (and that's according to IOSYS themselves). ARM was mostly responsible for the first two, but in this third outing he teams up with an old flame! That's right, Princess miko is doing vocals on all eight 「東方アゲハ NIGHTMARE」 tracks, including a duet with BeatMario. Other than pure denpa, some other genres explored include EuroBeat, Soul and "Gothic Horror"! ARM can do no wrong, forever a winner. Real fans with an open mind will also check out his solo album 「distant」.

While we're at it, let us also mention two more IOSYS albums, namely 「東方ENCYCLOPEDIA」 from ユウノウミ (side-note: she's actually a he) which includes FOUR excellent かめりあ compositions. The other is their 21st album 「風櫻 SECOND PHANTASMA」 (warning: broken website) which includes a fair amount of denpa songs, such as uno's 「きのこが好きで好きでたまらない魔理沙が歌う歌」 . Can you believe this is the same guy as RoughSketch??

C80: Celebrate KuKuDoDo with Birdtune's 『東方ピコピコ祭り』

It's been 1.5 years since the last Touhou arrange release from Birdtune and frankly, we were getting a little worried. Although the circle is relatively young having started in 2008, they've built an impressive legacy of fantastic albums (both original and touhou arrange) and frequent live appearances. But they've lost a bit of steam since their main vocalist みりん☆ "graduated" (read: hasn't done much since) shortly after the release of her May 2010 album 『アタラセカイ』. Since Birdtune is highly-regarded by denpa fans worldwide thanks to multiple creative albums, it would have been a shame for them to bite the dust so suddenly.

No way... do you think Lord KuKuDoDo would give up this easily? Enter their new in-house vocalist: nanano. Not much is known about the mysterious new singer, other than a couple posts on her blog and a hell of a debut! Actually she was also on HolicService's 『ニヒリズム!」 in May 2011 but let's not mix things up. She is officially attached to Birdtune and as you can see from the tracklist below, she's also very much in charge of lyrics. Otherwise she's also taking care of the new website and hopefully she'll be keeping KuKuDoDo's ass in gear to make sure he focuses on creating more albums!

Which brings us to 『東方ピコピコ祭り』, a full-on KuKuDoDo effort! His sharp, unique and refreshing style can be found on every single track, which almost turns this into a concept album compared to the previous compilations. As expected, there's a large percentage of straight-up denpa and ピコピコ songs, which this author would like to think is due to a personal request during our last meeting (hah!) Of course KuKuDoDo's requisite NewWave touch can be felt everywhere, since he's such a big fan of early eighties Synth Pop bands... but we already discussed all of his influences in the past!

Here's the awesome crossfade video, followed by the album tracklist. Feel free to download the MP3 as well. Please note that all instrumental tracks are included on the CD! A second promo video for the song 「小町ちゃんの超すごい三途の川ツアー」 (featuring nanano on vocals) should be uploaded just after Comiket 80.

Track Title Vocals Arranger Lyrics Original

How awesome is 桜ふみ singing on a Birdtune album eh? This collaboration is likely due to KuKuDoDo having composed a song on her second album 『』 back in October 2010. You might have heard 小岩井ゆづき on some of 2-Dimension's CDs, but still... WOW give us MORE! 小宮真央 is also a great fit for any Birdtune/Holic Service album, always good to hear her sweet little voice. Too bad Gumi didn't get to sing, although she did write some cool lyrics (especially 「秋葉原での日常」) Of course all the girls performed admirably but overall, we're extremely excited about nanano joining Birdtune and can't wait to see what's next!

Japan Firsthand: Comiket 79 Part 1 - Rants & Reviews

So, Comiket 79. That happened. Click images for larger resolution. CDs from left-to-right, top-to-bottom:

Row 1
  • ココ 「ココボクMUSICPARTY」: 11 brand new songs featuring the hyperactive ココ, no way in hell I was gonna pass this up! I actually picked it up at とらのあな, which had it on sale one day before it was released at Comiket. The Innocent Key website has samples for each song. さつきがてんこもり is one of the guest composers, therefore it's a must-buy! Lots of denpa and wacky pop. ココ goes waaaay over-the-top with her voice on this one... and we finally get official confirmation that ココ=ボク.
  • t+pazolite 「RESetup;」: I picked this up from とぱぞ himself and just had to tell him that I loooove his songs, especially when リズナ is involved. Although this new CD only has her singing three songs, it's an absolute rager. There's no doubt about it, this guy has a gift when it comes to fucked up hardcore-denpa music (not to mention he's probably the only one out there). I also got to see him perform live at the MegaPeer event, where he tore shit up in front of about 25 screaming fans. Intense!!!
  • ヒゲドライバー 「3UP」: This didn't actually come out at C79, but it was released in late November 2010 so it's still very new. While checking out the booth babes in the business area, I spotted this dude walking around with an Higedriver sign. Since I love his unique brand of Chiptune Rock (and wasn't aware about a third CD) I had to ask what was up. An interesting Engrish conversation ensued with the president of LOiD Records, who was thrilled to learn that a gaijin knew about his label and the release of 「コスモドライバー∞UP」.
  • ALBATROSICKS 「MERGE THE STRAWBERRY!」: I own all of the ALBATROSICKS albums released so far, so I felt like I had to get this one too. It includes 5 remixed tunes from each of their five previous albums, as well as a bonus track which features a seemingly drunk MIKO screaming her ass off. Speaking of which, I'm pretty sure she handed me the CD herself but she wasn't all dolled up I couldn't really tell. She did have a similar voice. Quim was there too, unfortunately his attempt at making an English joke failed hard (sorry dude). This is a decent CD for the price, especially for the REDALiCE and DJ Command remixes. The others are kind of boring though.
  • とろ美 「とろみ仕立て」: YAYYYYY I MET TOROMI. Mandi was right, she is incredibly small in person. She was dressed up as とろ弁天, her Ryohoji character. It was definitely cool to see in person, especially since I didn't have time to visit the shrine. She was very excited to meet me and I made sure to thank her for her years of lovely denpa music. This new album is by far her best, not to mention it has two tracks composed by ARM! This brings their total collaborations to four (in 2010 alone). The artwork is fantastic and I still can't believe she does everything herself. What a girl!

M3-2010春 電波ソング round-up (PART 2)

M3-2010春 has come and gone, leaving behind one of its most impressive sets of doujin/denpa offerings in recent memory. While the previous entry had a pretty complete round-up of the main releases, some interesting stuff escaped our vigilance and/or was completely unannounced. Yes, this post comes one week late... big whoop, wanna fight about it?

Good guy さつき が てんこもり (satsuki ga tenkomori) releases his own music through his studio皐 label but also takes care of side-project doujin circle ぐうのねサウンズ (GUUNONE sounds) which saw its third and four releases come out at M3.

「ミキューン!」 is a vocaloid compilation featuring satsuki and ラマーズP, a wildly popular Miku manipulator who got his very own full-length album on EXIT TUNES in 2009. All six songs are featured on this generous crossfade sampler, but you could also check out full versions of 「チョコレート」, 「ウインク・トランジ・スター」, 「STOMP THE ENEMY」 and probably the rest too if you look for them hard enough. All six tracks are extremely energetic and some of them were even tagged "denpa" by satsuki himself, so you know this is some good shit.

The second album is 「ACアダプターKICK-OFF!2」 which, as its title indicates, is the second entry in GUUNONE's "AC Adapter KICK-OFF!". Both this sequel and the original volume serve up wacky remixes of Nintendo classics such as Super Ghouls & Ghost, Mother 2 (Earthbound, motherfuckers!), Super Mario World and SimCity among others. Eight talented composers contributed a track, so this is a real treat for old-school gamers! Check out samplers for Volume 1 and Volume 2, but you should totally check out the full version of Satsuki's own track 「dead or die!」 which is a drum & bass remix of the first stage from one of the hardest games ever created!

There were a lot of great last-minute surprises at M3, but perhaps none greater than Birdtune's latest release: a new みりん☆ single CD!!! Don't let the fact that 「アタラセカイ」 was up against the clock fool you, its tracklist means serious business. We're talking brand new tracks from cosMo@暴走P, studio皐, 未来派 and a KuKuDoDo remix, not to mention moemoe art from あじさ 飴, the underground idol's usual illustrator. This is not only her most varied collection of music to date, it's also her best. Check out the sampler below, or download the MP3 directly.

33.turbo did have something for sale, but it wasn't her first single like previously presumed (it actually sold out on the only day it was available, that is to say M3-2009-fall). This time around, she had a brand new K-On! arrange mini-album for sale! Whether you're a fan of the series or not, you can't deny the sweet arrangements 33.turbo have to offer. Some chiptune, some drum&bass, all badass. The production team is listed here; looks like we're dealing with a brand new bunch of artists here! She apparently sold out this new mini-album within an hour... it was a steal at 300 yen to be sure. Hopefully this success is not short-lived and mimi-turbo can cook up a first album in time for Comiket 78!

You thought the glasses fetish was dead? Not so, says programYMG. The IOSYS/InnocentKey/SoundOnline supergroup has a brand new 9-track mini-album (5 of them are dramas). The actual songs themselves range from standard JPop to straight-up denpa, with a twisted gothic-themed one right in the middle. Too bad they don't go for the picopico stuff more often than they do, because that's probably where they shine the most.

ココ is an up-and-coming moe/denpa vocalist who's mostly known for her incredibly cute Innocent Key contributions, but true hardcore fans will remember her sweet collaborations with Satsuki the most. That Persona Arrangement Album was pretty sweet too! For M3, she was featured on Senses Circuit's 7th CD, cleverly titled 「ココミク☆ミラクル」, which features 5 original tracks from hitoshi. The above PV will give you a pretty good idea, but you can download a much longer crossfade sampler for your enjoyment. Doubt this will be as popular as MOSAIC.WAV's miku album... a shame, because it's definitely a high quality release that deserves everyone's attention!

Rapid-fire post-M3 news
  • Still no sampler from DystopiaGround's latest single, however you can check out some hilarious Engrish on nao's M3 booth. "This group of musicians is aiming at becoming the best A-POP artist in the universe"... or something like that? Wow, bold claim is bold!
  • Denpa idol maria-tan had her new single for sale... entitled 「バスルームは浮かれビート☆」. LOL is all that needs to be said.
  • Looks like Siestail delayed their Rizuna vocal album to C78.
  • Melo9 were at M3 but only had a two-track drama CD for sale, as well as their Valentine Day's single. Note that melo9 and おでんぱ☆スタジオ share some staff members!!! More on that later.
  • Twinkle Callion is another doujin circle that shares staff with melo9, one of the two singers this time. They're heavily on the moemoe tip, not so much denpa, but interesting stuff nonetheless. Their second single 「dream prayer box」 was up for grabs at M3.
  • As expected of とろ美, she had a new single just for M3. The second track 「キミに贈る言葉」 is new stuff, but the titular track 「センセイ布告」 can be downloaded from C:DRIVE as it's an ending theme for one of their recent eroge titles. Don't worry, she's more than likely to re-release this stuff at one of the coming comikets. The fantastic cover art though... that's bound to be a one-time deal only!

Birdtune's latest album hits the sweet spot

Birdtune's most recent Touhou Arrange album 「すいーつぱれっと」 was supposed to come out for C77, but manufacturing problems pushed its release date all the way to Reitaisei 7, which happened on March 14th 2010. Speaking of which, here are two pages of totally badass Touhou cosplay pictures from Moe Passion. Between C77 and 例大祭7, nothing changed on the album's tracklist, but Birdtune did revamp their album's page and put up a promotional video as well as a 12-minute long crossfade sampler.

Although the opening track demoed above is pretty good, the highlight would have to be the absolutely devastating Studio皐xななひら duo and their song 「想い!ハーフ&ハーフ」 (1:45 mark on the sampler). Now Satsuki-sama you should be familiar with, but don't miss out on nanahira any longer. She's building an impressive pedigree on NicoNico and recently delivered some killer performances on a couple of C77 albums. More on her later!

C77: Birdtune and Satuki team up for Sweets Palette

Is there such a thing as a 電波萌え萌え overdose? If "Sweets Palette" was some sort of food instead of a record, would if get featured on This Is Why You're Fat?!? No doubt in my mind, but I'll take the risk. Birdtune enlisted the aid of blog favourite Studio Satuki (along with quite a few others) to compose a song for their upcoming C77 album 「すいーつぱれっと」. All involved staff can be found on the official website.

This is actually the second in a series of Touhou Arrange CDs for Birdtune. The first one, 「東方ちゅんちゅん郷」, came out mere months ago at M3-24, so odds are it is still available for sale. As of this post, samples for the second album weren't available, but you can check out the first to get a pretty good idea. IOSYS take note: this is how you do a GREAT Touhou comp! No more filler bullshit, plzkthxbai.

UPDATE: Due to manufacturing problems, release of this album has been postponed to Reitaisei 7 (March 2010).

M3-24 and 東方紅楼夢-5 circle lists are out

Two big events are set to take place on October 11th, where hundreds (thousands??) of new records will launch. The list of circles participating in the 24th edition of M3 (Yokohama) was finally unveiled a few days ago, nearly 2 weeks past the scheduled mid-September date. A quick search for 電波 yields results such as BRAINBOX, Halozy, ぐうのねサウンズ, Birdtune and of course our beloved とろ美. Have fun randomly clicking your way through hundreds of unknown circles and let us know if you find anything interesting.

Notice any BIG omission from that M3 lineup? That's right, IOSYS have opted to support an increasingly larger Osaka-based event called 東方紅楼夢 (Touhou Kouroumu). I was hoping they would have some sort of presence at M3 so that I could get someone to pick up 「bitter」 for me, but between this new event and a rather large concert in Hokkaido the night before, I guess they're running out of staff to maintain an omnipresent status. Unlike their two M3-24 albums, they won't have anything new to sell at Kouroumu, they're probably holding out for C77. But about the event itself: exactly one thousand artists will be peddling their wares. That's incredible, considering it's only on its fifth iteration. Unfortunately, their catalog does not classify artists by genre or provide any description whatsoever, so good luck figuring out who's who short of being there in person.

C76: E-penis embiggeningation, MOSAIC.WAV photobook impressions

Click photos for much larger versions. From Left to Right, Top to Bottom:
Missing from this picture is Veil's 「Veil ∞ DENPA!!!」 CD because... well it was sold out. But it shall be mine one day, yes it will. On the other hand, I got my hockey gloves on an elusive copy of MOSAIC.WAV's JapanExpo "photobook". Yes, "book", because while it's still an extremely cool collector's item, it's still nothing more than a glorified brochure (18 pages). It seems quite a few of the pictures were taken directly from mi~ko's blog and from a few professional sources that you've all seen by now.

The booklet describes their trip to Paris in a chronological order, with the actual concert occupying the middle pages. It's interesting to see their reaction to the armed soldiers patrolling the airport. As could be expected, they hit a bunch of so-called Japanese restaurants to see how different the food would taste. There are a few sections dedicated to their exchanges with the French fans. Another interesting blurb is about how she was surprised to sign an Amusement Pack CD, even though they didn't have any for sale. Then they spent some time visiting landmarks such as La Tour Spirou Eiffantasio and L'Arc de Trimeuf. Since I'm such a huge fan of his, I would have liked Kayapi to share his own account of the concert and event, but overall I'm satisfied with this photobook.

Good luck getting yours! SUCKERS.

Extra-special thanks to an extra-awesome someone!

Under the Scope: In-depth KuKuDoDo feat. Gumi profile

Welcome to the second edition of Under The Scope, where we take a closer look at the career of various Japanese denpa artists. This is different from our other features such as interviews and reviews, since the focus here is more on exploring the artist's discography and overall path of progression. You folks are in for a rare treat today: "KuKuDoDo feat. Gumi" is a brand-spanking new sound unit that formed just over a year ago to this day. They have already started to build an impressive discography in these past 12 months, not to mention their biggest release is going to come out at Comiket 76. Without further ado, let's Osaka Denpa Get!!!

KuKuDoDo feat. Gumi is a brand new Osaka-based, denpa-oriented duo whose first activities trace back to early 2008. As the name suggests, KuKuDoDo (male) is the producer and Gumi (female) is the main vocal act. They operate together under the Holic Service doujin circle (think of it as a multi-purpose D.I.Y. label). But to further complicate matters, they are also closely related to the Birdtune doujin circle (to be discussed in a further issue of Under the Scope) who released their first EP, as they are also based in Osaka. KuKuDoDo composes a number of songs for Birdtune, but Gumi herself is mostly exclusive to Holic Service activities. Of course, "Gumi" itself could just be a second pseudonym for any singer from any other circle. Why they decided to make things so complex is anyone's guess, but let's just play along, shall we?

As previously mentioned, KuKuDoDo's music is unequivocally denpa at its barest denominator, a fact that the duo is proud to endorse. Of course, the genre is merely a loose descriptor for a mish-mash of cute/moe JPop, chiptune, high-energy dance tunes and whacked-out compositions, but so far they fit under the umbrella just fine. Furthermore, some of their songs are a bit more "normal", sounding more like I've Sound's earlier gritty trance than cartoony. So it's fair to say that while denpa is at the core of their creativity, they're willing to explore connected avenues. Although they haven't composed any proper eroge or anime theme songs yet, they are offering their services and are looking for staff as we speak.

Not unlike their peers in IOSYS (with whom KuKuDoDo collaborated by way of Birdtune), Shanghai Alice's popular Touhou STG series plays a huge part in their musical inspiration and by proxy, their marketing ability. But you shouldn't let that stop you from giving them a chance if you've gotten sick of constant Touhou rehashes, as the influence here is certainly palpable but not overwhelming by any means. The fact remains that ZUN provides amazing blueprints for budding artists to build off from and propel themselves into a solo career, which is the step where KuKuDoDo feat. Gumi are at right now. Additionally, some of their earlier songs also made use of Hatsune Miku's charming voice, but the original musical arrangements far outshined the virtual diva's waning appeal.

But KuKuDoDo's influences extend far from the insular confines of Japan. In fact, this guy is a full-blown fan of England's legendary synthpop years, citing bands such as Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure and KajaGooGoo as primary sources of inspiration. Who knows, maybe his artist name is a direct reference to KajaGooGoo? At any rate, KuKuDoDo wanted music to play a big part in his life a number of years ago, citing that as a child, he wrote "I want to be a roller disco DJ" on a 短冊 (Tanzaku), those long pieces of paper that people use to write down their wishes at a 七夕 (Tanabata) festival. He was "dormant" for a number of years, but took it upon himself to realize his wish from 2000 on, when he began experimenting with Cubase and other DAW tools. Very little is known about Gumi herself, unfortunately. Holic Service also have a PR lady, Ponza, who's in charge of events, marketing and so on.

Let's move into discography territory. So far, KuKuDoDo feat. Gumi have released exactly 22 songs spread across 9 CD releases, including 2 singles and 2 mini-albums. They first made a name for themselves by releasing some online videos of anime theme song remixes, but their first original song didn't even feature Gumi on vocals but rather Hatsune Miku. This was on the 「れいんep.」, their first single which came out in April 2008 and also featured three other original tracks, including the unique 「コイノカイロ」, which was renamed 「恋の回路」 later on. Holic Service wasn't even formed then, so Birdtune handled the distribution of this first single.

The summer of 2008 passed by and presumably the first single did well, as KuKuDoDo and crew didn't waste a single second away. They created their own music circle Holic Service to take control of their upcoming releases. The first self-published effort came out in October 2008, in the form of their second single 「HANABI」. Right off the bat, KuKuDoDo wears his Brit-pop influence on his sleeve with the wild opening track 「stjarna」, an hyperactive denpa remix of an otherwise quiet Depeche Mode instrumental piano tune written by founding member David L. Gore. The title track itself is a pretty dark composition, but 「マジカル☆蛙たん」 grabbed the attention of denpa fans worldwide with its textbook execution and addicting patterns.

But in order to tease their fans, they only put the short version of that song on the second single, paving the way to their first mini-album, which came out... on the same fucking day. This was a bit of a questionable move, but maybe what they really intended is to have 「HANABI」 acting as a sampler to 「ぐみれいんぼっ!」. The seven-track mini-album paints a better picture of the unit as a whole, to be sure. It opens with a remixed version of 「恋の回路」 that clearly indicates both KuKuDoDo and Gumi gained quite a bit of skill in their respective departments. 「Dancing Vanpire」 [sic, bitch] is an enjoyable trance-ish song that, as previously mentioned, recalls this writer of some of KOTOKO's better earliest songs. Then the album closes with 「マジカル☆蛙たん」 and 「大好きバイバイ」, two light-hearted denpa songs that most certainly turned up the heat at their recent concerts.

Comiket 75 saw the limited release of 「エネルギー冷麺」, a Touhou-oriented single that didn't feature any original KuKuDoDo compositions, but rather 3 covers of recent ZUN songs. They also threw on a 10-minute crossfade sampler of their previous compositions but more interestingly, a 4-minute long audio segment of their (presumably first) live appearance. It doesn't sound half-bad, and it's pretty awesome to hear the crowd reacting so well. But much like with the second single, this release mostly served to make way to their second mini-album, which didn't come out on the same day, this time.

Rather, 「エネルギー冷麺 てんこ盛り」 was released in time for the March 2009 例大祭, the wildly popular Touhou festival. This time around it's exclusively a ZUN cover album, but a full-on denpa one for what it's worth. The interesting part about it is that it features quite a few collaborations. They're not going to be listed here, because the official Holic Service page does a great job of listing all of the various performers, arrangers and original compositions from which the covers originate. Oh and short sample versions of all songs. 奥村りお provides a splendid performance on 「カッパイズム≠Nitorism」, especially considering that this is only her second recorded song. But the real star here is still Gumi, especially on the hilarious 「O.T.オタクは彼氏なのか?」 whose lyrics talk about the life of an Otaku, going to Akihabara, becoming an Hikikomori, all to the tune of the ridiculously catchy 「U.N.オーエンは彼女なのか?」.

This brings us to the current writing time of this in-depth article: July 2009. KuKuDoDo feat. Gumi have recently announced a brand new album for Comiket 76, and it already shows a lot of promise. This one will be completely written around 「東方星蓮船 ~ Undefined Fantastic Object」, the 12th Touhou shooting game which incidentally also comes out at Comiket 76. Interesting that they'd already have enough source material to write a cover album, but there is a demo out there after all and presumably plenty of original songs to go with it (as well as ZUN's official description of the songs). Now although the whole thing is orchestrated by KuKuDoDo, there are three arrangers and EIGHT vocalists who are enlisted, including the fantastic 井上みゆ (INOUE Miyu) of LoveBullets and ave;new fame!!! This is quite the prize catch for the duo, but considering their previous releases, all of the 10 tracks should prove quite interesting. This is being heavily promoted as a pure 電波ソング album, so keep an eye out on this one, denpa fans!!!

In conclusion, KuKuDoDo feat. Gumi and Holic Service should definitely be moved to high priority on every denpa fan's radar. While they certainly benefit from denpa's increasingly huge wave of popularity created by MOSAIC.WAV, SHORT CIRCUIT and of course IOSYS, they do stand quite tall on their own, with some memorable arrangements that will require permanent brain storage if you give them enough exposure (aka they'll stick in your head). Of note: the duo is particularly active on niconico, having released some absolutely insane videos recently (you're not supposed to know that's them, 電波の世界 exclusive info!).
