Denpa collection for sale!

UPDATE 2019-09-28: SOLD!!! Watch this space for an eventual online project which may feature parts of this collection. Thanks again to EVERYONE who contacted me, whether for a few CDs or the whole thing, or just to drop some kind words my way. Special mention to all the denpa thread anons. Much appreciated!

Hi folks, long time no talk! I've been busy with real life stuff and although I still check into the latest denpa news every once in a while, I'm closing a big chapter in my life. I've thought about this for a long time and the day has finally come: I'm selling my denpa collection! Of course I'm doing this to fuel my untappd addiction to put my kids through college (yes, that'll do), but I'd like to think someone out there will really enjoy owning these CDs rather than them just staying in the closet for another 5 years.

Named by yours truly, now yours to own!

You're looking at more than 200 items from the 2007-2014 era, mainly CDs but also a fair amount of swag such as bags, books and posters too. The crown jewel is by far the Extravagantly-Extra-Equipped Edition of MOSAIC.WAV's 5th album, but there's plenty of obscure trudenpa stuff too. You have near-complete collections from Odenpa Studio, 33.turbo, ちぃむdmp☆, Holic Service, Birdtune, etc.

Psst... I heard you like odenpa studio?

Everything is in great-to-mint condition, with the overwhelming majority of items still being sealed. A few of them have cracked cases (very minor), mostly due to shipping from Japan. Almost all of these were bought directly at Comiket/M3/you name it.

プチリズム fullset!

I've inventoried every single item in this handy Google sheet, including closeup pictures and links to the best source of information I could find about each item. I can absolutely take more pictures or provide more details on request.

Now regarding price. Shit man, I don't know. What I do know is it will probably cost a buttfuck and a half to ship this stuff over to your place. All items are located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in case you can do local pickup. Otherwise, I want to say I am flexible and open to offers and I am neither expecting a couple hundred nor a couple thousands dollars. But.... somewhere in between.

"And now for my next number, I'd like to return to the classics"

C79: IOSYS, ALBATROSICKS, DystopiaGround, Siestail +more!

We've already covered a bunch of hot C79 tickets but with the event happening in a few days, it's high time to finish our shopping list suggestions. Also worth noting: doujincore.com is organizing a group import until December 28th! New this time: it covers Days 2 and 3. If you want any of the following items and can't make it to Comiket in person, then that's your BEST option! Trust us, it feels good (man) to give these underground doujin artists your hard-earned dough. They truly deserve it too! As a reminder, here's what we already covered:
Now here are some more MUST-BUY items!!!

First up is a MONSTER of a Touhou Denpa record! And that's not even just our words, IOSYS themselves have dubbed their 16th album "NO DENPA NO LIFE". Strong words from one of the world's most notorious doujin circle!  Hot manly tears trickled down my cheeks when I first laid eyes upon this motto and the beautiful nurse trio which is sure to serve as the album's cover art. But that's not all: Queen とろ美 herself is singing the opening track「ロマンチック早苗ラブ」! Here's the PV and crossfade MP3.

Perhaps the greatest feature of 「東方云符不普」 (Touhou Unfufufu) is that it benefits from a strong theme. This isn't just a bunch of random songs, there's a focus on 電波系 in each and every song. Surely even regular IOSYS fans will appreciate this conscious effort, regardless of their views on denpa. Add yet another strong ingredient to this winning recipe: hardcore DJ uno (a.k.a RoughSketch) is contributing more and more songs these days! This is sure to win over a bunch of new fans... way to go IOSYS!

Still with IOSYS, we now have a second Albatrosicks tribute album! 「MERGE THE STRAWBERRY!」 features five tracks taken from all five of their official albums. There's a little bit of something for everyone this time around. For instance, the first track 「ミコリザ4世」 is a strong eurobeat flavoured remix courtesy of DJ Command. As an aside, this is the same dude who came up with the unbelievable 「アニメユーロベスト~School Edition~」 which is chock-full of pumped up anime theme songs performed by ななひら and ボク, among others! Tracks 3 and 4 slow things down, but REDALiCE made sure to end the mini-album on a high note!

nao's post-fripSide unit DystopiaGround is going to release a fourth album at C79! Simply titled 「#004」, it will feature an opening track by none other than ARM from IOSYS! There's also a rocking track by Demetori, a slow X-mas tune from 5pb president 志倉千代丸 and an upbeat little from 新井健史 (Araken), who is frequently in charge of her denpa songs (including her latest eroge song). Another strong DG release, nao fans don't miss up! All four songs can be sampled on the homepage.

Another Comiket, another badass album by C.H.S. head-honcho t+pazolite and his eternal vocal companion リズナ. Together at Comiket 78, they came up with the unique「Honey I Scream!」; too hard for denpa purists, too weird for JCore snobs... but absolutely PERFECT for crossover fans. t+pazolite is not afraid to tread uncharted waters and give us his absolute best material each and every time he releases something. 「RESetup;」 follows in that direction and offers 10 fantastic Touhou arrange songs, three of which include vocals from Lady Rizuna.

Speaking of Rizuna, she was once heavily associated to doujin circle Siestail, especially under her previous pseudonym 鈴木ななこ. These days she almost exclusively sings for t+pazolite, but that certainly hasn't stopped Siestail from releasing new albums! Their latest effort 「魔法のリップサービス」 (Magic Lip Service) is a concrete example of resilience shown by circle owner すぺらんかー (Spelunker). Since the late nineties, the circle went through a couple of mutations and featured tons of different vocalists and graphic artists, but he keeps trucking on. In 2010 alone, he has released ELEVEN albums on his label Siestail, quite impressive. The last one of the year is pretty damn cute and should please Touhou fans looking for something sweet.

How to prepare Toromi... the Toromi way! Denpa Queen とろ美 is cooking up a new album for Comiket 79! Very little information has been shared so far, here's what we know: 7 tracks total, two of them by ARM (!), one of them is considered bonus (?)... and this crazy cool illustration may or may not be the cover art. Talk about a multi-talented artist! Oh but track #3 「センセイ布告 」 was definitely released back in March 2010 on a self-titled single. Pretty sure that song was for an eroge ED, but no matter, one less hunk of plastic to hunt down! If you haven't read our 2-part Toromi feature/interview... WHY?!? Go read them now! Part 1 is a photo journal from a visit to Ryohoji and part 2 is an exclusive interview, with video! By the way, Ryohoji is releasing a second CD; although it doesn't feature new songs, it does include a lot of voice work by とろ弁天!

Finally, here are a couple of quick-picks:
  • Halozy are releasing TWO new albums for C79: 「Halozy Remixes vol.1」 (MP3) is obviously a remix album, while 「Cosmic Armonica」 (MP3) features brand new songs. Both have tracks with ななひら! That's all you need to know!!!
  • I've Sound will release a live DVD from their Summer 2010 SHORT CIRCUIT III concert in Tokyo.
  • No full-length album from MOSAIC.WAV (??!?) but they do have a fourth うじゅ CD!
  • SHOT MUSIC has a BAD ASS CD featuring 13 eroge hits remixed hardcore-style. 「SUPER SHOT3 -美少女ゲームリミックスコレクション‐」 has work from DJ SHIMAMURA, REDALiCE, DJ SHARPNEL (and more) as well as vocals from 民安★ROCK, YURIA, 榊原ゆい and more!
Check out the Denpa Watchlist on the right column for last-minute additions! Last post of the year for us!! Happy new year and/or see ya at Comiket!!! FOLLOW US ON TWITTER!!!!!!!

Here's your SHORT CIRCUIT III tracklist

Did I fucking call it or what?

SHORT CIRCUIT III comes out on June 25 2010, followed with a concert on July 19 at Shibuya-AX. The last two tracks are brand new, but "send off" should be getting a demo eventually, since it's the opening tune to SAGA PLANETS' latest game 「キサラギGOLD★STAR」. The last track, "interceptor" will probably get a video clip from I've Sound themselves, so look for that! There's no telling who (or what) "Larval Stage Planning" is at this point, your guess is as good as mine.

Though the C77 maelstrom still virulently rages on, 2009 is now squarely behind us. 'Twas a good year for denpa, it was. Without giving away too much, we've still got one big "2009" article lined up for your refined reading pleasure. But until then, please indulge with us as we lay down our most perverse wishes for the coming year... and feel free to throw in your two cents when it's all said and done.

5 - The 電波ソング tag is not taboo anymore -- so use it
Calling all artists, musicians, singers, youtube/niconico uploaders -- DENPA IS OK!!! There's no need to hide behind fancier terms, it doesn't have to mean "crazy in the head" anymore. We have claimed it as ours and now it's time to take this shit to the next level. The war still rages on, of course, so don't let your guard down until the enemy is completely disgusted with the soundtrack to our collective lives. For you see, there are still those who refuse to "stoop" to our level, thinking that denpa song is a lowly denominator for rubbish music. Ironically, GWAVE's Love Bullets producer KATO describes denpa as something that "accomplishes entertainment", so that misguided reviewer will have to re-evaluate her standards. I'd like to think we're doing a good promotional job here, but all of the credit goes to the creative artists this blog covers, as well as the fine folks dedicated to events such as Denpa Song Night and the DENPA!!! gatherings.

4 - MOSAIC.WAV and IOSYS (ARM+miko) crossover
This one's high on my personal wishlist. As much as I looooooove MOSAIC.WAV as a standalone unit, they can deal even more damage when otaku mastermind kayapi is paired with a fellow composer and mi~ko an accompanying songstress. They went with koike-aniki for a long time and that worked pretty well, although they made it very clear that they were not gonna be the second coming of Under17 anytime soon. TONAKAI wrote a couple of fantastic MOSAIC.WAV songs before launching into Love Bullets full-time. Then their recent 「Heartsnative」 mini-album saw them team up with 鶴田加茂, one of the most popular Hatsune Miku composers out there. So theoretically, they should be open to the following idea: Kayapi, ARM, mi~ko and miko on the same song(s). No seriously, I know Japan is supposed to be a peaceful country now, but that deadly combination right there, my friends, gives THEM the nuke.

3 - Japanese stores must open up to international buyers
Japanese music fans OUTSIDE of Japan have had to live with a dilemma for years, one that quickly fades away the second that special release shows up in torrent form. Most Doujin music comes out at a fair price and stores such as akibaoo and toranoana don't have the huge markups that HMV and amazon liberally apply. But they don't offer international shipping! There are folks like myself who would just LOVE to shower hardworking denpa artists with hard-earned dough. Holic Service, Birdtune, Satuki? I would finance them myself if they knew about paypal at all! We don't all have 1000$ to blow on roundtrip airfare when comiket rolls around. Is Japan not the industrialized country they pretend to be? HOW FUCKING HARD CAN IT BE to add international shipping to akibaoo? And don't even get me started on those courier/proxy services, bunch of fucking crooks. Props to CDJapan for stocking up on more independent releases, but their search system is wack as all get-out.

2 - Enough with the regurgitated Touhou madness
This one's a bit of a double-edged blade and I might as well fall on my sword if I don't explain this properly. I do enjoy the revered SHMUP series, but there was a dark era of doujin music when it was all touhou all the time. Who isn't sick of Marisa Stole the Precious Thing by now? I'm not sure anyone wants this mistake repeated. Somehow IOSYS got the memo and spawned great original series such as Albatrosicks and ARM's fantastic denpa album. Originality is one area in which MOSAIC.WAV has never disappointed. I know, starving musicians want their new products to sell, but a little artistic integrity goes a long way with hardcore fans. If anything, I'd like to see more internet memes turned into songs, such as Studio Satuki's Denpa Hammer. On the flipside, we do have circles such as Holic Service doing recycled wonders with their Energy Reimen series... but KuKuDoDo's original compositions are just as good and don't carry the same sense of déjà vu, so why bother in the end? Again, let me make myself clear: I'm open to more Touhou remixes (as long as they're denpa-flavoured) but from now on, original compositions will get priority coverage on 電波の世界.

1 - I've Sound must bring SHORT CIRCUIT back from the dead
This one's not a wish, it's an order. I know the American I've Sound underlings are reading this, now that they've opened up an English website and started translating cool interviews. Let's be perfectly honest: KOTOKO and crew are to denpa what Thomas A. Edison is to the electric light bulb. They didn't quite invent the genre, but they sure made it work! What's that, you want me to be even more perfectly honest? How's this: all of KOTOKO's post-SC2 singles SUCKED. This affirmation does exclude the brilliant 「七転八起☆至上主義!」 but to be fair, it came out a mere three months after SHORT CIRCUIT II did. 2008 and 2009 were pretty abysmal for I've Sound overall, but that's not for this blog to discuss. To add insult to injury, they did come out with a couple of hyperactive-eurobeat-denpa compositions that were pretty damn good, but diehard fans will only consider their existence validated if everything comes out in the form of a compilation CD, along with 3 or 4 new songs. Enough with the bait-and-switch, SHORT CIRCUIT III is where I've Sound should be at... 2010 is their make-or-break year as far as this fan is concerned.

Well, that's that. Hope I haven't offended anyone, but feel free to lash out in the comments if you are. Otherwise, a heartfelt happy new year to all of you readers! I would especially like to thank my trusty sidekick mandichan who has provided me with tons of links and exciting news through the year. Another grateful mention goes out to all the Japanese composers and denpa fans who didn't delete my emails right away and chose to communicate despite my awkward JLPT4 "skills". Here's to another year of lyrical delusion and musical nonsense!!!

New KOTOKO eroge OP is anything but 「fickle」

Due to I've Sound's ongoing decennial celebration (which is currently drawing some less-than-enthusiastic criticism from its own fanbase), KOTOKO's latest eroge opening theme has all but slipped under everyone's radar. Composed by the oft-maligned 井内舞子 (IUCHI Maiko, who went by her alias UETSU Miyu until late 2006), 「fickle」 does not live up to its title (luckily for us!). Instead of being inconsistent, it is a fairly stable and enjoyable piece of music that does not break any new ground but instead brings us back to the better moments of the SHORT CIRCUIT series. Download it now and see for yourself.

It opens with a short guitar riff that is suspiciously similar to MELL's engrisherrific 「RED FRACTION」 and could presage another OUTER failure, but quickly moves into its own thump-heavy entity that is neither hesitant nor ostentatious. The rhythm is pulsating, the guitars create an enticing melody and of course KOTOKO delivers an engaging set of vocals that display the emotion and passion that our favorite singing starlet is usually known for. Do we have a winner yet? Well kind of like the Hurricanes taking the Stanley Cup in 2006, it's not what you'd expect, but it gets the job done.

Between denpa-rock tracks such as this one and last year's 「bumpy-Jumpy!」, (the spectacular) 「Crash Course 〜恋の特別レッスン〜」, 「Stars Biscuit」 and the previously-reviewed 「Swift Love ~健全男子に物申す~」 and 「I need magic ~解けないマジ☆キュン♪~」, we may yet get our damned SHORT CIRCUIT III sometime in late 2009. Think about it for a moment: GWAVE are just exploding onto the scene with U and 井上みゆ, ave;new have a brand new 「A LA MODE」 volume just around the corner and MOSAIC.WAV are strengthening their hold on the genre with the release of their 4th album. This leaves I've Sound out in the cold with the odd eroge OP; they just HAVE to do something major soon if they wish to stay in the race, out of respect for their fans and to honor their "Pioneers of Denpa" title that was rightfully earned when they released 「恋愛Chu!」 back in early 2001.

Coincidentally, game studio SELEN also lists I've Sound as BGM composer for the game 「はらみこ」. This is interesting because they have not traditionally dabbled in game music, strictly their opening/ending themes, but correct me if I'm wrong. Also can someone help me translate the game's title? It either means "Skirt Steak Girls" or "Pregnant Virgin Maidens". On second thought, don't help... this is as good as it gets!

DVD検討: SHORT CIRCUIT II Premium Show

Turns out Comiket 73 wasn't a total bust from I've Sound after all. They did end up releasing "I've MANIA Tracks Vol. 1" a weak and unimpressive compilation of obscure, "hard-to-find" and mostly remixed songs that no one asked for. Well, I never heard KOTOKO's "Crossed Destiny" before, but it certainly isn't one of her best songs, since, you know, I would have heard it otherwise. On the other hand, they also released a very solid DVD featuring the first and only SHORT CIRCUIT live show that took place on July 21 2007 in Tokyo.

I realize that for my readers' sake (millions of them) I should be writing a SHORT CIRCUIT article before reviewing the DVD, but that's just how unorganized I am. Let's just say that SHORT CIRCUIT a) has nothing to do with the radical '80s movies and b) is I've's collection series of mostly-denpa songs. Most will argue that KOTOKO and I've (possibly) came up with the first denpa song with 恋愛CHU! Eventually I will cover the series, but for now let's just take a closer look at the first show...

First things first, you will notice that the video and sound quality are as good as they can get! You'll get a thrill from hearing the crowd shouting at the top of their lungs and watching them shake their light sticks in unison. My major complaint about the camera work is that, while the number of angles provided is more than sufficient, I would have appreciated more closeups of the musicians and on-stage performers. I find it amazing that they managed to capture what are essentially electronically-created songs and transform them into a much more natural and musical format. We barely ever see the drummer, the performer which I find myself staring at more than the singer when attending concerts. However, I don't think he's the same one that accompanied KOTOKO when she played Toronto and Dallas in 2006. Either way, talented folks, the lot of them. Let's rip into the songs.

めぃぷるシロップ: Great choice for a first track, as it sets the pace for the 2 hours to follow! KOTOKO is surrounded by 10 energetic cheerleaders while she dons a purple dress and puffy skirt. Unfortunately, she is slightly out of tune, as if she hadn't practiced prior to the concert or is simply nervous in front of the capacity crowd. The latter of which obviously doesn't mind as everyone is ecstatic and responds to the song with great synchronization.

はじめまして、恋。: NOW WE'RE TALKING! This is easily my favorite song from Short Circuit II, and having shook off what little nervousness she previously possessed, KOTOKO marvelously performs this one. The cheerleaders get the boot as they are replaced with KOTOKO's "sexy dancers" (as she described them on YTV Canada). It's almost a good thing I wasn't there or I would have been kicked out from stage dive attempts! Notice how no security guards or bouncers are to be found even though we're talking about a major event. She briefly pauses to welcome everyone to the premium event and to introduce the lovely Utatsuki Kaori who joins her on stage to perform...

恋愛CHU!: As previously noted, this is probably one of the "first" denpa songs made famous. Kaori wears the same sort of frilly dress, but a pink one. For whatever reason, she doesn't look very comfortable on stage as she is constantly arching forward, possibly from the embarrassing platform shoes that she had to wear. The two girls make very little movement and KOTOKO gradually leaves the stage.

消えない想い: I don't remember this song being a part of the Short Circuit series, and I don't remember hearing it before. It sounds like it features backing vocals by KOTOKO but she is nowhere to be seen. This one is mellow, but in an annoying way. I actually can't stand it, so allow me to move to the next one.

I'm home : Wow, 2 smooth ones in a row? What is Kaori trying to do and who is she kidding with that out-of-tune singing? I'm sure that song has its hardcore fans but they'd be hypocrites if they weren't cringing like I was.

レモネード: Strike three, you're OUT! By now I've had my fill of Kaori's boring songs, let's just hope the next one isn't as sleep-inducing.

Pure Heart ~世界で一番アナタが好き~: Not bad, not bad. 4 dancers get on stage and try their best to light up the crowd after three downers.

アナタだけのAngel☆: Much better, I love the fast palm muting on this one, but of course, they won't show the guitar player. This isn't bad, but I want KOTOKO back. Kaori still can't her tone down perfectly and it just ruins an otherwise fine song.

Do you know the magic?: I remember the first time I heard this on Collective (aka I've Collection 6), I instantly fell in love with the guitar licks and I really wish I was there on stage performing it. Being surrounded with so many cheerleaders would only sweeten the deal, of course. The crowd really lights up for this one and provides the backing vocals for what would normally be echoes of Kaori-chan's voice.

Cream + Mint: KOTOKO is FINALLY back but, sadly, is performing one of her least memorable songs. At least she changed into a nice black robe which, dare I say, gives her a bit of a gothic lolita look, Yousei Teikoku-style. She chats up the crowd just a bit then goes into...

さくらんぼキッス ~爆発だも~ん~: This powerful denpa number really, really brings me back into a happy mood. KOTOKO is alone on stage for this one, but moves along admirably considering she never goes out of tune and doesn't gasp for air.

きゅるるんKissでジャンボ♪♪: They really kept the best for the end, didn't they? Two great denpa songs in a row is just what the doctor prescribed for that genki feeling. Two sexy maid dancers really help pushing the moé factor as far as possible...

Princess Bride!: This song was previously played live at the 2005 Mutant Dwarf fan event in 2005, and while this new version isn't bad at all, the previous one is much more energetic in comparison. Not to mention the camera angles extensively feature the musicians, which greatly pleases me. But KOTOKO is giving it her all, as usual. She eventually starts to run out of dance moves and goes into an embarrassing little jig, which would even make my moves look good.

ねぇ、…しようよっ!: Here's a great song that usually perks me right up when I'm feeling blue. The odd thing about the performance is that the dancers are brought out wearing the same uniforms they were wearing during the aforementioned 2005 event. For consistency's sake, shouldn't they have come out during Princess Bride? Maybe they weren't ready... you never know what goes on backstage!

Change my Style ~あなた好みの私に~: This is one of my favorites and it was also played at Mutant Dwarf 2005. Again, I'm a little disappointed with the new performance, as the older one featured tons of improvised guitar work that gave it a unique feeling. While still enjoyable, it remains a bit dry. Here's another, older version, that's just as insane. Check out that huge crowd!

夏草の線路: One of my favorite Kaori X KOTOKO songs ever written, it always gives me good vibrations when I hear that intro. The transition from electronic to real instruments is, once again, incredible! Which begs the question, why didn't they just do it that way in the first place? At least Kaori doesn't mess this one up too bad...

ジェットスマッシュ!: Never heard this one before. I don't see the need for bringing out so many cheerleaders on stage for such a bland and average song. Kaori still looks like she's suffering from back pain and KOTOKO is having major problems with her bra strap... those are by far the highlights. Next!

Short Circuit: Some real action on this one, from all fronts! Both girls are loosening up and moving around a lot more naturally. Camera angles cycle between each other at a rapid pace, lots of zoom in/out and of course, the cheerleaders are going nuts! How the hell did they muster so much energy for the whole night? At the end of the song, KOTOKO, Kaori and everyone else get off the stage, leaving the fans screaming for an encore. They quickly show up on mini sportsbikes, much to everyone's enjoyment. Each member of the band, dancers included, gets introduced to the audience. It's pretty obvious what's coming next!

↑青春ロケット↑ : We all knew the show wouldn't end so soon, and it's a nice touch they got them to change outfits so quickly, to really emphasize what a great song this is. Nice show of respect to their fans! You can feel the energy in the club, everyone is just jumping and singing along and it makes for an electric performance.

Double HarmoniZe Shock!!: All good things must come to an end, and what better way to end the night than with arguably one the most powerful Short Circuit II song? I'm running out of compliments here, all I can say is that the performance is stellar and highlights I've as a serious musical force to contend with.

Whew, there you are. When it's all said and done, this DVD comes highly recommended (if you can find it!) despite a number of passable songs and some sub-par performances from Kaori. NOW, how about a MOSAIC.WAV ~first live~ DVD? We all know it's coming, let's just hope it comes sooner than later.
